McLaren P15 set to be the fastest road-going track car the British brand has ever produced

 McLaren’s next car in its ultimate series will be the fastest road car for the track the British manufacturer has ever produced, according to a new report

UK motoring magazine Autocar revealed details of the forthcoming hypercar, which has the codename McLaren P15, saying it will be “the most extreme, track-ready but still road-legal” car McLaren offers.

It will allegedly make use of an improved version of the current McLaren P1 hypercar’s 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8, which will produce 789bhp – a 62bhp rise over the P1. It won’t, however, make use of the P1’s electric motor.

The absence of the electric motor, as well as the inclusion of McLaren’s new Monocage II carbon tub and race-inspired interior, means the P15 will weigh less than 1,300kg.

It will therefore boast a better power-to-weight ratio than the P1, and is expected to dominate the current hypercar in terms of on-track performance. Autocar also expects its 0-60mph time will at least match that of the P1, which stands at 2.7 seconds.

Styling apparently favours function over form, and is intended to increase performance rather than provide aesthetic pleasure.

McLaren is expected to reveal the P15 – and confirm its existence – later this year, with its public debut taking place at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.

Mark Tisshaw, Autocar editor, said: “McLaren has always been relentless in the pursuit of performance – but with Aston Martin’s upcoming Valkyrie and the Mercedes-AMG Project One set to redefine the rules of the hypercar market, it has to keep ahead of the game. Hence the P15.

“There’s no doubt that this will be an incredible machine, but what McLaren has learned of late is to create a car with a broad dynamic brief. With track performance as its goal, the P15 will obviously be outrageous on a racing circuit, but with that low weight, pared-back cabin and non-hybrid powerplant, it promises to be exceptional on the road too. If it does that, it will have created arguably an even better car than the P1 – some achievement.”
