McDonald’s put a big burger change on the menu

Anyone who knows me might be surprised to see me writing about McDonald's (I'm the friend who loves vegetables lol) but I find there is a lot to learn fron McDonald's new burger launch.

After the McSoup fail, McDonald's has decided to once again try for a new change. A premium burger product.

McDonald's has tried premium burgers before, like the Arch Deluxe, but the burders never took off because people who wanted nicer burgers traditionally went to Chili's or TGI Fridays.

But right now consumer trends are focused on value, which has caused McDonald's to try again for the premium offer. McDonald's and Burger King are competing on $5 meal deals.

CFO Ian Borden talked about the chain working on a bigger burger during the call and said:

"As we look to further build on our leadership in beef, our team of chefs from around the world have created a larger satiating burger. We'll be testing this burger in a few markets later this year ensuring that it has universal appeal before scaling it across the globe."

There are four things I have learned from seeing McDonald's new burger launch:

  • leading companies always try new things - a lot of them fail
  • everything comes in cycles, if something fails it doesn't mean it will never work
  • customers are looking for value over savings right now
  • competition can help you point you in the right direction
