Lizzie Ryan, she/her, Head of Sales Operations

What’s your 2-sentence autobiography?

Hi! I'm Lizzie. I run Sales Operations at Monte Carlo. I'm originally from Sydney, sunny Sydney, Australia. I moved to the U.S. two and a half years ago.

What is your background prior to working for Monte Carlo?

I was at Segment, a customer data platform provider like many other Monte Carlo folks. (Monte-acks? Monte Carlians?) And before that, I used to live and work in Sydney, Australia, and spent five years consulting.

Why did you choose to work for Monte Carlo?:

Two reasons. I already have this answer down. 1. Barr: When I was looking for work, I wanted to work for a female CEO. And she is one of the smartest people I have met. 2. The people. The colleagues I work with at Monte Carlo are some of the best and most intelligent people. I also get the opportunity to work with Stephen Guerguy again and Jordan Van Horn, two of my former Segment co-workers. I'm in good company.?

What do you appreciate most about working for Monte Carlo?:?

What I appreciate most is our company’s culture of complete rejection of perfection. I'm a reformed perfectionist. At Monte Carlo, I'm actually congratulated and celebrated for de-prioritizing things to focus on what matters most for the business.?

What are you passionate about outside of working for Monte Carlo?:

I love cooking. And cook about six, seven nights a week. Also, mentoring other young women; that's something that gives me a lot of joy.

How did you get interested in your field of work?:

I always knew I really wanted to work in tech. The way that I jumped in was actually through sales and sales management. One example of how I got interested in Sales Ops was when my manager had a template that she wanted me to use for QBRs, and I wouldn’t use the template. I just stopped pulling data from Salesforce and started looking at it differently.

But what’s interesting is that the VP of Sales at my old company used to come to my QBRs, and she’d always say, “Oh, you always plot something interesting that no one else is kind of looking at.” That feeling I got from thinking outside-of-the-box is what I love about Sales.?

If you could describe yourself with one word, what would it be and why?:

I'm energetic. I’m upbeat and enthusiastic, and when I’m meeting with the people on my team, I feel like you really have to be a source of positivity and energy.

One of our company values is “beat the odds”. What does “beat the odds” mean to you?

When I was 15, there was a running race at school at my school where they’d pick the 10 fastest runners for the 100-meter dash. Once you’re picked, you race at an invitational. I've never been picked; I've never really been that good [at running]. For some reason, I was in year eight this year, but I ran the invitational and won, and everyone was saying, “I didn’t know you could run that fast!” And I said, “ I didn’t even know that I could run that fast either!” I learned that everyone has more inside them than they think. Everyone is capable of doing more than what they probably limit themselves to.?

If you could pause your life for just one moment, what moment would that be and why?

Right now and being six or seven-years-old and spending time with my grandma.

How do you recharge??

Barr actually taught me this: any time something gets too stressful, get up and go for a walk. Or I call my friends or family and talk to them about anything and everything! You need to clear your mind!?

What’s the one takeaway you want people to know about you?

Take the chance and just get on the plane! (In this case, I’m referring to making a move to the U.S. to work in tech!)
