MBSE With SysML: Team Benefits Are Considerable

Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) is popular among systems engineers who advocate the use of SysML?as a standard architecture modeling language for systems Engineering applications.

This is particularly relevant for systems engineers who want to distinguish their approach from Model-Driven Development and its variants, which tend to be software centric.

MBSE historically focused on expressing and recording requirements, design, analysis, and verification information. But as modeling technology matured, it provided even more value by accelerating learning (e.g., simulation) and providing better insights into the physical world (e.g., digital twins).

Experts in this area believe both are important to evolve live systems and enable Enterprise Solution Delivery.

The benefits of MBSE with SysML are considerable and include:

  • Improved risk management
  • Better requirements management
  • Increased efficiency and cost savings
  • Improved communication and collaboration
  • Enhanced system understanding and documentation
  • Improved system quality and performance

Another benefit of MBSE: Risk due to technology is also reduced, because of a greater focus on formalizing how the technology works.

A survey from the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) and the Systems Engineering Research Council (SERC) indicate that most organizations are now using or about to use MBSE.

Experts in this area contend that organizations can best succeed in the adoption of MBSE on a companywide scale, first by understanding the key challenges to scalability, then by choosing state-of-the-art tools and methods for mitigating those challenges.

MBSE and SysML are important because they complement the beginning of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which can best be described as the advent of “cyber-physical systems” that involve entirely new capabilities for people and machines.

Analysts believe this is not only a question of technology (i.e., the complexity of technical systems), but it also includes new ways in which technology is embedded within societies and even within human bodies to provide value-added services.
