May's Data Protection bulletin

See below for May's (the month not the PM) data protection bulletin. Coverage this month includes a report on the global ransomware attack that affected 200,000 victims in 150 countries. We also consider news that the Digital Economy Act has passed into law, and the announcement this month that President Trump has issued a Cybersecurity Executive Order.

We outline news that both Facebook and WhatsApp have been fined by the French data protection authority and the Italian antitrust agency respectively and report on Facebook's £110m fine by the European Commission for misleading the authorities during its acquisition of WhatsApp in 2014.

Thursday 25 May 2017 marked start of the 12-month countdown to the introduction of the GDPR. We have outlined some guidance below to help you think about the practical steps companies need to take before the rules come into effect a year from now.

In our ongoing coverage of GDPR updates, we also summarise reports that the Spanish watchdog and the German Parliament have respectively issued a code and new data protection laws as part of GDPR preparations. We outline the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) update on self-reporting of data breaches in the UK and take a look at the release of GDPR guidance for charity fundraisers. We also consider news that the European Commission has appointed a multi-stakeholder expert group to advise it on potential challenges relating to implementation of the GDPR.

Finally we give our monthly rundown of the latest enforcement action taken by the ICO including a record fine of £400,000 for a company behind 99.5 million nuisance calls, a substantial fine for Greater Manchester Police for failing to keep victims' sensitive personal data secure and a £100,000 fine issued to a company which sent millions of spam marketing texts.
