Mayor Crombie Launches 2017 Mayor’s Citywide Food Drive Challenge

I am pleased to once again launch the 2017 Mayor’s Citywide Food Drive Challenge as a part of The Mississauga Food Bank’s Annual Thanksgiving Campaign in partnership with the City’s Fire and Emergency Services team, Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie said yesterday during at a free family community BBQ at the Streetsville Village Square.

“Starting Saturday, September 16th - our goal is to raise 225,000 lbs of food and $125,000 by October 13,” Mayor Crombie said. “Last year we raised 219,975 pounds of food and $123,531 – we have our work cut out for us again,” Mayor Crombie added.

“For the 15 per cent of Mississauga residents who live in poverty, providing adequate nutritious food for their families is a daily struggle.”

“The Mississauga Food Bank, through its member agencies including Compass Food Bank, Salvation Army Erin Mills Food Bank, Seva Food Bank, St. Mary’s Food Bank and many more exist to help ease this struggle for our hungry neighbours.”

Our shared vision is a Mississauga where no one goes hungry, Mayor Crombie said, adding that “I am also pleased to inform you that while not a member agency of The Mississauga Food Bank network, Eden Food for Change is once again actively participating in this year’s campaign and will receive all food donations from Fire Stations 115, 122 and 111 for the duration of the campaign.”

The public can participate in this campaign in the following ways:

  • Participate in the challenge by inviting constituents to raise food and funds for The Mississauga Food Bank, their agency partners and Eden Food For Change. You can do this by promoting the campaign through your communication channels – social media, newsletters, e-newsletters, website, etc.
  • Join the #OneBagChallenge:
  • Fill a bag with nutritious non-perishable food
  • Take a photo or video as you deliver your donation to your local grocery store, fire station or The Mississauga Food Bank
  • Post your photo or video on social media and challenge five people to do the same within 48 hours. Make sure to use the hashtag #OneBagChallenge!

It takes all of us to feed our hungry neighbours, Mayor Crombie said, adding that “I nominate the following 10 people to take the One Bag Challenge.”

1.   Kathleen Wynne, Premier of Ontario

2.   Navdeep Bains, MP Mississauga-Malton, Minister of Innovation, Science and Eocnomic Development

3.   Charles Sousa, MPP Mississauga South, Minister of Finance

4.   Jennifer Evans, Chief, Peel Regional Police

5.   Tim Beckett, Fire Chief, City of Mississauga

6.   Janice Baker, City Manager & CAO, City of Mississauga

7.   Michelle DiEmanuele, President & CEO, Trillium Health Partners

8.   Mary Preece, President & Vice Chancellor, Sheridan College

9.   Ulrich Krull, Vice-President & Principal, University of Toronto Mississauga

10. Team from The Mississauga Board of Trade

“I look forward to our entire community’s enthusiastic participation in this campaign as we partner together with constituents encouraging them to help feed their hungry neighbours,” Mayor Crombie concluded.

Great initiative. I hope this will continue next year as well because i can contribute to this next year only. I have become a new resident of Canada and will be landing in Toronto soon. Very proud to see such initiatives. Well done. All the best.

In the past few minutes while you read this, more children will have died. By the time you get to the end of my message, another one will have passed away from hunger. I’ve seen malnutrition up close and it is painful, and unbearable. I’ve seen how very little it takes to save a child’s life, but how easily they can fall ill and die if they don’t have simple things such as milk, food, clean water and vaccinations to stop disease. Food security, agricultural investment as part of national and international development strategies and in the allocations of aid resources are all within the control of people. A fairer distribution of wealth lies with people. Dealing with issues around climate change and planning for them lies with people. Confronting racial and gender inequality lies with people. Even solving the current global economic and fiscal crisis, of which you are undoubtedly and I hope blissfully unaware right now, rests with people.

Great contribution. Just wondering if some of the pounds of food accumulated, will be going towards the hungry and dying children in foreign countries, or will it be spared to those that can have a least a meal a day?
