Maybe knowledge reduces fear?

The CDC provides a free downloadable database of all COVID 19 cases and deaths (found at usafacts.org). It is tragic that 175 thousand lives have been lost to this virus, and I offer my sincere sympathies to those who have lost friends and loved ones. I also am aware of the immutable fact that approximately 8,000 people die every day in the US --- 22 days and another 176 thousand of us will be gone.

Some other facts for you to consider (as of August 23rd) that may help reduce your fears:

There are 3,195 counties and unincorporated areas in the US, including Alaska and Hawaii.

50% of all COVID deaths have occurred in only 46 counties (<1.5% of all counties)

80% of all COVID deaths have occurred in only 239 counties (7.5% of all counties).

80% of all COVID deaths have occurred in only 15 states.

55% of all counties in the US have lost 5 or few people to COVID.

While I appreciate the notion that we, as citizens of the United States, are all in this together, the true risk of death from COVID 19 to the overwhelming majority of us is negligible. Smart, prudent behavior to keep yourself, families, and friends safe should always be the rule, and governmental over-reach should always be seen for what it is. Political agendas and public safety don't seem to me to be a reasonable combination, ever.

I welcome your comments and feedback. Please feel free to share this as you see fit.

People who have years of experience in business should focus on that. People who have years of experience with infectious disease should be given the credibility they deserve. When infectious disease experts are superseded by politicians and business interests, we get the current situation. In every state where business interests took priority over infectious disease control we got huge increases in covid cases and deaths. Here’s the real tragedy. We could have avoided so much suffering and preserved a considerable part of the economy if leaders had urged common sense infectious disease control measures. Quit making this about too much government. Good grief, look who’s in charge of the government. Prudent business leaders should be advocating for measures that can bring down cases. Here in AZ the governor finally relented and “ allowed” jurisdictions to mandate face masks. And he re-closed bars and such. And surprise, after a horrible spike in cases after premature reopening of businesses, cases have gone down. Those are facts. Business leaders have an important role in this fight. I implore you to rise to the occasion. And thank you to those who have taken the lead and sacrificed.
