Maybe Global BIM Teams Need Global BIM Standards?

Maybe Global BIM Teams Need Global BIM Standards?

Our two weeks in London were exceptional - thanks to all of the amazing BIM champions that we had the opportunity to meet - in fact we met with twenty seven companies - three owners/clients, twelve architects, nine contractors, and three service providers. We apologize that we couldn’t fit more of you in the time.

It was great to be in London and yet very sad to be so near when people were attacked on the Westminster Bridge and in the Parliament building. Our thoughts are with the victims’ families.

During our meetings, companies shared that their teams were having a tough time standardizing BIM across multiple locations and they confirmed that a Leaner approach to BIM Execution and LOD Planning would be very welcome.

We also received some insightful feedback from a few experts and based on this we made a couple of changes so that we will also support UK BIM standards. We really appreciated the advice!

At LOD Planner we’d like to support the right standard(s) and even a combination of standards to get the best results for project teams.

We’d like LOD Planner to support:

  1) US BIM Standards

  2) UK BIM Standards

  3) and a consolidated “Global BIM Standard”

During our stay we ate fish and chips, multiple full english breakfasts and I ended up coming back more than ten lbs heavier - so it’s back on the California beach body diet now ;)

We’ll be at the BIM Forum in San Diego next week - connect if you’d like to chat?: [email protected]

I can see the potential and would like to contribute. Sounds like just what the industry needs to bridge the gaps between members of international teams! Thanks Clive Jordan and please keep us informed of any plans or progress!

Sorry for the three-post-reply! We're interested in creating a flexible solution allowing support for company and location-specific standards but also, and maybe most importantly(?), an opportunity for BIM experts worldwide to continually improve a shared global standard. Kinda like a crowdsourced, but curated, BIM Standard. The project will be open to all - just let us know if you'd like to get involved in the challenge.

If an owner requests “BIM <enter name of BIM use here>” on their project and asks the team to follow: 1) a new standard that the team has never used before 2) the same standard that the team has been using on all other projects Which approach might have a smoother workflow, cost less, incur less risk and yield higher quality deliverables? Please don't get me wrong...we’re certainly not wanting to do BIM the same way on every project - we’re just attempting to standardize each use case’s starting requirements - which can then be made project specific (and teams can understand the deltas/important differences on their project).

From BIM Expert thread: You might not experience this but BIM Managers have shared with us that they are running into training issues implementing a completely different “standard” for each project that they work on. Couldn’t we say: "the more BIM standards we have the less standard each BIM standard becomes"? :)
