May the Sun Always Shine on Larry McHugh
As we wish Larry well in his upcoming retirement from the Middlesex Chamber of Commerce, I harken back to my days at Xavier High School and reflect on one of the classes I took with Larry. Yes, of course, I was on the football team - but needless to say, there were many others who actually knew how to play the game. For me, what stood out was his teaching of our civics class, where we received the New York Times and spent the class debating every topic imaginable. Larry encouraged open and healthy debate and encouraged all of us to be informed as that would make us good citizens.?
His leadership became the basis for a deep and lasting friendship like so many of us have developed with him over the years. He's been a mentor and guide; you always knew he was rooting and cheering for your success.??
Larry is not just a local treasure but also helped reshape Connecticut's higher education system chairing the board of directors for the University system and UCONN. Both systems grew in national reputation during his tenure, and their physical plants completely transformed each system. As president of the Middlesex Chamber of Commerce, Larry has mentored many great business leaders and helped Middlesex County to thrive and prosper.??
Those who have worked with him in various capacities over the years will fondly remember him saying, "The sun always shines on Middlesex County." As Larry prepares to retire, we can rest assured that the sun will always shine on Larry McHugh.
