May - one for the books

May - one for the books

What a month! We've experienced one highlight after another. We kicked off in Cannes with our annual 'The Cannes Luncheon' and wrapped up with two wonderful awareness days in Ghana for 'Menstrual Hygiene Day'

Let's take a look step by step…

“The Cannes Luncheon”

hosted by Toni Garrn Foundation and Amend

On May 17, 2024, The Cannes Luncheon returned, at the H?tel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Cap d’Antibes, during the Cannes Film Festival. Many friends from around the world in film, fashion, music, art, and international philanthropy, came together to support the vital work of the Toni Garrn Foundation and Amend in improving the lives of children in Africa. Co-hosted by our Founder, Toni Garrn, The Cannes Luncheon aimed to support both the Toni Garrn Foundation's initiatives for girls' education in Sub-Saharan Africa and Amend's programs dedicated to reducing road accidents among African children.

The event proceeds will be split equally between Amend and the Toni Garrn Foundation. Our share will be benefiting a new project of the Toni Garrn Foundation. Together with Action For Women in Development (AWID), we will establish a skills center in northern Uganda where girls and women can complete vocational training.

We look forward to keeping you updated on the next steps!

Menstrual Hygiene Day ‘24

Two days full of action in Ghana

This year, our efforts reached new heights as we continued our mission to break the stigma surrounding menstruation and ensure that every girl has access to the menstrual products and education she needs.

On May 28th, we joined hands with our incredible partners in Ghana and Uganda to mark Menstrual Hygiene Day with impactful events and activities. Here’s a glimpse of what we accomplished:

Community Demonstration: Over 800 community members came together in Wioso, Ghana, for a powerful demonstration. We placed the topic of menstruation at the forefront, engaging local politicians, cultural leaders, and community members in discussions about menstrual hygiene and access to products.

Educational Outreach: The team of Alma Mater Education Ghana worked tirelessly to educate over 1,000 girls and boys about menstruation. Through interactive sessions, we provided crucial information about menstrual health, breaking myths, and encouraging open conversations.

Support from Leaders: In a significant show of support, the current members of parliament of the Wioso district, Ghana, donated 1,000 menstrual products. This gesture not only provided immediate relief but also highlighted the importance of political backing in our fight against period poverty.

Empowerment Workshops: We conducted workshops aimed at empowering young girls with the knowledge and confidence to manage their periods safely and with dignity. Among other things, they learned how to make their own menstrual pads. These workshops are a cornerstone of our strategy to foster a supportive environment for girls’ education and well-being.

The road ahead

Our work doesn’t stop here! We’ve laid a crucial foundation, but we are committed to continuing the fight until every girl has access to the menstrual products she needs. With your support, we can expand our reach, educate more communities, and advocate for policy changes that prioritize menstrual health.
