May Morning in Oxford – Executive chauffeurs for visiting dignitaries

May Morning has been a beloved Oxonian tradition since before the first recorded celebrations in 1674.

The celebrations of the 1st of May begin at 6am with the Magdalen College Choir singing the hymn, Hymnus Eucharisticus, from the top of Magdalen Tower, pictured. They also sing Now the Month is Maying as the sun rises over the city, followed by prayers led by the Dean of Divinity.

Revellers begin to gather in the streets from very early in the morning, some having stayed out all night partying in their colleges. The crowds stretch for miles into the town, with one year reaching a record number of 27,000 people.

Morris dancing follows the prayers, with Oxford University students and townsfolk alike dressing up in festival attire and joining in the revelry throughout the day.

For years there was a tradition of the students from nearby colleges jumping from the Magdalen Bridge into the River Cherwell, with many still in their refinery from the balls the night before, but this has been banned following injuries and damage to the ancient structure, although some are still defiant in only way students can be!

May Morning in Oxford is attended by many dignitaries, and some celebrities of both the Oxford University and the local area which is home to some households names.
