May Day Greetings

Shall we celebrate the arrival of Spring, or spring to a revival of consciousness?
Sadly, but I guess not surprisingly, May Day was removed from the calendar in my homeland, where it originally marked the 1886 Chicago Haymarket Massacre of demonstrators for workers' rights to less oppressive work hours. In its place, we now celebrate the last Monday of May, Memorial Day, as the symbolic changing of the seasons with patriotic flag-waving and a parade glorifying the graves of the dead boys of our tragic wars.
Perhaps a few of you are old enough to remember this song... The young folks around me never heard of it. However, from the lyrics it could have been written just yesterday.

6 年Good Morning George - Happy Mayday to all. Your piece is very apposite in our current sad climate of various variations on the theme of wall building. By the way, the very positive verse you quote from the Internationale is from Billy Bragg's substantially rewritten 1990 version; there have been a number of versions, and the original was somewhat more violent.
