May 9th Meeting – The Memphis IMC Club
The objective of The Memphis IMC Club is to help each of us became a safer and more competent instrument pilot.?
Here’s the flight plan for the Tuesday, May 9th, 7 PM CDT meeting of The Memphis IMC Club, via Zoom.
Misleading Indications?- You’re on Victor 229, at 7,000’, midway between Lakewood NJ and Hartford CT. You are over water and in VMC but there’s a solid cloud deck below. Except for the eastern end of Long Island, which is forecast VFR, ceilings in the region are 700- 1000’ and visibilities are 2-4 miles. You suddenly notice the oil annunciator light has illuminated indicating low oil pressure. Oil temperatures appear to be OK. You report the problem to ATC but don’t declare an emergency. A couple of minutes later, the DG starts drifting and the attitude indicator is not responding. Vacuum system appears to be OK but you may have a second system problem. You review ditching procedures but the thought of ditching in the ocean sends chills down your spine. You also brief the ILS for the right approach at KJFK, the closest airport. You may even be within gliding distance if the engine quits. What do you do?
Become a Safer Pilot – Use The FRAT?- We all enjoy flying but the problem is flying is potentially very dangerous. The good news is that we can make flying safer by systematically identifying safety-related hazards and mitigating those risks. We will explore psychologist Daniel Kahneman’s research into how and why we sometimes make bad decisions and what to do about it. Ties to our last meeting and discussion of flight risk assessment tools (or FRAT’s).
