May 20th
On May 20, 1873, Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis received a U.S. patent for blue jeans with copper rivets. This patent marked the beginning of the iconic denim jeans industry. Strauss, a German-American businessman, and Davis, a tailor, collaborated to create durable work pants for miners during the California Gold Rush. They reinforced the pants' weak points, such as the pockets and seams, with metal rivets, leading to the birth of what would become the modern blue jeans. This innovation revolutionized workwear and laid the foundation for a timeless fashion staple that continues to be worn worldwide.
