?? NATO Chief Scientist announces winners of NATO Women and Girls in Science Challenge

The NATO STO hosted the finale of the inaugural Women and Girls in Science 2024 (WGS24) challenge last week at NATO Headquarters in Belgium, celebrating the pioneering work of young female researchers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The event brought together 12 finalists from 10 NATO Nations, who presented their research proposals to a panel of experts. Dr Bryan Wells, NATO Chief Scientist, announced the three winners, who will have the opportunity to visit the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) this summer.

?? 2024 Collaborative Programme of Work Report

The STO Collaborative Programme of Work (CPoW) encompasses more than 300 activities undertaken by our network of more than 5,000 scientists and engineers from across the NATO Alliance – the world’s largest research network for defence-focused science and technology. This year's CPoW Report describes the publicly releasable portion of our ongoing work, including in areas such as cyber, AI, quantum, and space.

?? Video: A new approach to detecting person-borne IEDs

People carrying improvised explosive devices (IEDs) pose persistent threats to security at military bases, airports and other sites, and they can be difficult to detect in time. Now, a group of NATO STO scientists have developed a sensor fusion architecture to improve the detection of person-borne IEDs, and recently tested their approach at Ft. Moore in Georgia, USA.


?? STO conducts wargame on multi-domain space deterrence

A team of researchers from the NATO STO and NATO Allied Command Transformation (ACT) carried out a wargame on space deterrence last month, bringing together 37 participants from nine NATO Nations. The team aims to develop and test a comprehensive space deterrence framework that would employ a full spectrum of deterrence options, and both national and NATO instruments of power.

STO holds first NATO Committee-level meeting in Sweden

The NATO STO System Analysis and Studies Panel held its semi-annual business meeting this month in Stockholm, marking the first NATO Committee-level meeting held in Sweden since the country joined the Alliance earlier this year.

Chief Scientist speaks at inaugural NATO Space Symposium

Dr Bryan Wells, NATO Chief Scientist, delivered a keynote address and participated in the introductory panel session at the inaugural NATO Space Symposium last month, discussing the impact of emerging and disruptive technologies on the space operational domain.
