These prestigious awards celebrate excellence performed by ORISE participants in the areas of scientific achievement, professional growth, project contributions and leadership.
We're also excited to announce a new award that allows ORISE participants to recognize their exceptional mentors.

Contestants sought for Ignite Off! 2024
ORISE participants (undergraduates through postdocs) are invited to apply for the?2024 ORISE Ignite Off! competition! ??
This exclusive competition showcases the talents of ORISE interns and fellows as they share their research through a fun and engaging five-minute presentation called an?Ignite Talk. An Ignite Talk is a structured format wherein each competitor has five minutes to present their research project using 20 picture-centric slides that automatically advance every 15 seconds. Finalists will compete for cash prizes and winners will be featured on the ORISE website.
ORISE interns and fellows may apply here to participate in the competition. The deadline to apply is June 24.

PAYING IT FORWARD
?? Meet Sara Wolicki, MPH, a former ORISE fellow who now works as a health scientist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .
As part of the CDC’s Injury Center, Wolicki is involved in data management, program evaluation and information dissemination, all with the ultimate goal of helping narrow the gap between research and practice.
In addition, Wolicki serves as a mentor for current ORISE fellows.
“I had amazing mentors as a fellow at CDC,” she says. “I learned so much from them, and I want to make sure I pay that forward as a mentor now.”
'A LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE'
?? Meet Myla D. Worthington, a recent ORISE participant in the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Minority Serving Institutions Internship Program. During her internship at Sandia National Laboratories , Worthington optimized a rapid test for a parasitic infection and conducted a literature review on neurotoxins.

A 'DREAM' OPPORTUNITY
Karen Valdez discovered a passion for scientific research while attending college. Now, through an ORISE fellowship, she's studying tick-borne diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . In this episode, Valdez talks about her research at the CDC, her educational journey and what's next in her career.
PROTECTING THE GREAT LAKES ??
Isabel Dunn and Suse LaGory, ORISE participants at the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Great Lakes National Program Office, join the show to talk about their love of the Great Lakes region, the importance of conservation and what it's like conducting research on the EPA's Great Lakes research vessel — Lake Guardian. ??

NATIONAL SCIENCE BOWL WINNERS ANNOUNCED ??
On April 29, students from Lexington High School in Lexington, Massachusetts, and BASIS Independent Bellevue in Bellevue, Washington, won the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) 's 34th?National Science Bowl?, a nationwide academic competition that tests students’ knowledge in all areas of science and mathematics.?
John Kronenberger, a former?ORISE participant with the USDA Forest Service National Genomics Center for Wildlife and Fish Conservation, is the lead author on a research paper recently published in the journal?Environmental DNA. The paper?validates 46 new and previously published probe-based qPCR assays targeting invasive species throughout the continental United States.
Joanna Elmore, an ORISE participant with the National Genomics Center for Wildlife and Fish Conservation, is the lead author on a research paper?published in the Journal of Heredity. The paper details research efforts on the seabird diet of invasive barn owls in Hawaii.
