Hot on the heals of a hugely successful Australia Tourism Exchange 2023 (ATE23) aviation program, in this months client newsletter we take a look at where China airline capacity is pivoting too in a recovery of capacity – it’s fascinating to see where that recovery is occurring, or not; US capacity levels with 2019 through-put, showing a full recovery (more or less, but depending on which city) and later this month, our very own annual RoundTable occurs in Cairns – but not before attending next weeks Routes Europe.?

As clients – many of you are asking about mobile phone data, to assist in your understanding of catchment and assist in explaining to target airlines, your ability to draw customers to your airport.?We’ll take a closer look at this data next month.

DATA Insight: Chinese Outbound Seat Capacity?

?Based on schedule capacity, we’ve analysed some key markets for Chinese carriers, and make the following observations from what the forward schedules display, as at April 2023:

• By Volume, Frankfurt is leading the long-haul recovery, followed by Moscow SVO & Sydney. By percentage vs YE Mar 20 capacity, Auckland is leading the recovery, followed by Frankfurt & Melbourne.
• Taking a forward schedule view: Moscow could expect the fastest recovery by volume. By percentage of YE Mar 20 capacity, London (LHR) could expect the fastest recovery.
• As of the forward schedule to-date, the bottom 4 destinations are San Francisco, Los Angeles, Vancouver, and New York (JFK) – Both by volume & percent of recovery.
• As of YE April 2023, Sydney is 2 points behind Melbourne in terms of percent of recovery. However, the forward schedule suggests Melbourne’s recovery could be 14 points ahead of Sydney in 12 months’ time.

?Turning to the US Market, TSA throughput for April came in at 99.7% of 2019.?In effect, nationally speaking, a full recovery.
