Maximizing strawberry yields with Hydroponic Systems: Less can be more

Strawberry cultivation is an intricate balance of optimizing yield while minimizing costs. Traditional farming methods often rely on high-density planting, assuming more plants will naturally result in greater overall production. However, recent experiences from around the world tell a different story, one where fewer lines can lead to higher yields and lower costs. At Hydroponic Systems, we design, manufacture, and sell advanced cultivation systems that revolutionize the way strawberries and other crops are grown globally. Our innovative approach has helped farmers achieve impressive results by rethinking density and utilizing our Spacer and gutter systems.

Case Study: A Success Story from the UK

One large strawberry grower in the UK faced a significant challenge. Despite planting in 18 lines per bay, the yield was a disappointing 0.613 kg per plant. Frustrated and looking for solutions, he reached out to Hydroponic Systems for advice.

After assessing his setup, we recommended reducing the number of lines to 12 and incorporating our Spacer systems. This strategic change led to remarkable improvements:

  • Increased Yield: The yield per plant more than doubled, reaching 1.4 kg per plant.
  • Cost Reduction: Fewer lines meant lower costs for plant material, gutters, irrigation, and fertilizer.

This dramatic improvement wasn't a one-off incident. Similar successes have been documented in diverse locations such as Japan, Mexico, Portugal, and Paraguay, proving that this approach is both efficient and cost-effective.

Understanding the Science Behind It

The key to these results lies in the Spacer system's ability to optimize the growing environment. Here’s how:

  1. Improved Airflow and Light Penetration: Reducing plant density enhances airflow and light penetration, critical factors for plant health and fruit production. Better airflow helps prevent diseases, while increased light boosts photosynthesis, leading to more robust growth and higher yields.
  2. Efficient Use of Resources: With fewer plants per bay, resources such as water, nutrients, and fertilizers are used more efficiently. Each plant receives optimal amounts, reducing waste and ensuring healthier growth.
  3. Enhanced Root Development: Spacers elevate the plants, promoting better root development by allowing excess water to drain efficiently. This prevents root diseases and supports stronger, more productive plants.

Global Success Stories

Farmers worldwide have adopted our Spacer and gutter systems with similar success:

  • Japan: Strawberry farmers have reported significant yield increases and lower operational costs, making their businesses more profitable and sustainable.
  • Mexico: The optimized setup has led to healthier plants, higher fruit quality, and reduced incidences of disease, translating to better market prices and increased revenue.
  • Portugal and Paraguay: Both countries have seen improved water and nutrient management, leading to higher yields and more efficient use of resources.

I read the article and want to ask ; How you suggest me for 11 lines or 13 lines instead of 12 that the yeild and quality defers? What about making strawberry plants less densed and use 18 lines and using lights or day time longer ? ??
