Maximizing Storage Space in Your Southern Maryland Home

Maybe you have a smaller home, or perhaps you’ve accumulated more than you realized in the last few years. Whatever the reason, it’s common for homeowners to feel short on storage space. Before you decide you need to relocate or donate all your belongings though, there are some simple strategies that can help homeowners better utilize the space they have. Let’s take a look:

Convert Wall Space to Closet Space

A lack of closet space is a common complaint among homeowners. Whether your home truly is short on closets, or your closet space is simply full, homeowners can think outside the box – or the closet, really – to gain a bit more space. Missing a closet in your entryway? Adding a few shelves, a bench with baskets underneath, and several hooks can transform your wall into the closet you need. The same is true in any room. A thin shelf against the wall in a bathroom is a great option for linen storage, and even adding shelving on your bedroom walls can create more storage for clothing.

Look for Nooks

Even in smaller homes, there is often underutilized space. If you’re wanting to get more storage out of your home, you can’t afford to overlook the nooks. Adding storage units that fit in corners or in low-ceiling spaces will help you take advantage of these spaces. The area under stairs, for example, is a common place homeowners can create some additional storage.

Multi-Purpose

When you want more storage, a great option is choosing furniture with storage built in. Rather than a typical coffee table, go for one with shelves and baskets underneath or an ottoman that opens into a storage bin. If you have shelves in your entryway or kitchen, add some hooks underneath to double the storage. Especially in kids’ rooms, beds with storage systems under them can be a perfect solution.

Build Up

Many of the things we store we don’t need regular access to, like seasonal clothing, for example. For those items that you won’t be reaching for on a daily basis, looking upwards for your storage options is a great option. Is there space on top of a taller TV unit or armoire? A few bins that match the style of the room can blend right in while giving you additional space. We often install shelving at eye level, but what about the couple of feet above that? Adding some higher shelving that’s easily accessible with a stool (or tiptoes), is an easy way for homeowners to better utilize their vertical space.
