Maximizing GIS and BIM at the AEC Integration Summit

Mandates for BIM deliverables instead of 2D PDFs are ushering in a new age for construction and infrastructure development. This transition creates opportunities to improve project execution, stakeholder collaboration, and overall built-world project efficiency.

Esri is taking on a leadership position in this transition, and we are excited to be a sponsor of the Construction Progress Coalition (CPC) 's AEC Integration Summit. Our involvement in this annual event shows our commitment to promoting innovation in the AEC industry using GIS and BIM.

Mission of the summit:

Professionals and organizations seeking to manage the AEC industry's digital transition and improve the flow of information across professionals turn to the Construction Progress Coalition and the AEC Integration Summit .

This year, Esri will co-lead one of the workshops at the summit, specifically addressing:

"How might we capitalize on new mandates for transportation projects to require 3D BIM handoff in lieu of 2D PDFs... in ways that projects adopt new means and methods between design, coordination, construction, and operations stakeholders...so that the full potential of integration between GIS and BIM can be realized?"

Esri's Role and Teamwork:

At Esri, we appreciate the importance of this transformation and its challenges for the AEC community. Customers of all sizes, working at all phases of the construction project lifecycle are already bringing GIS and BIM together.?

At the Summit, we’ll leverage our experience in this area as we work with a team of specialists to address the challenge. With the team named Legally BIM, Todd Sutton , Rachael Ferrera , Tedd Weitzman , Kelly Cone , Nicole Williams , S. Jacob Tambunga, P.E. , and Christopher Tipa will study BIM handoff requirements and find new ways to integrate design, coordination, construction, and operations.

Our work will begin by documenting the "current state" of 2D and 3D regulations and their effects on the AEC industry. We will use the Construction Progress Coalition's "shared pains" technique to create a "future state" vision throughout the rest of the event. This collaborative approach addresses all stakeholders' concerns, creating a more integrated, efficient, and sustainable AEC business.

GIS/BIM Integration Promise:

Integrating GIS and BIM unlocks location intelligence, spatial analysis, and project management possibilities. Bridging these two technologies improves project accuracy, efficiency, and sustainability. At the summit, we will brainstorm with the AEC community, share our ideas, and to devise best practices for using GIS and BIM to benefit all stakeholders.
