Maximize Your Worth: Sam Struan on Confidently Mastering Salary Negotiations

When it comes to salary negotiations, one of the biggest barriers is the power imbalance (real or perceived) that tends to exist in these scenarios.
Oftentimes this leaves the candidate feeling like they are at the mercy of the interviewer or organization. This can be incredibly frustrating and detrimental to our confidence as well.
So, what steps can candidates take to feel as though they’re in the driver’s seat in their salary negotiations?
In this week’s featured episode, “Negotiating with Confidence: Sam Struan’s Key’s to Larger Salaries”, talent acquisition and recruitment professional Sam Struan shares his expert advice for helping candidates maximize their earning potential and successfully negotiate higher salaries in the job interview process.
For starters, Sam advises listeners that it’s not just about what you say, but how you say it.?
For example, if a recruiter or interviewer is asking you for a salary range, rather than saying, “I’m looking/hoping to earn between X and Z”, candidates should reframe their response to “I’m currently interviewing for positions that pay X to Z range.”
This small shift not only removes the aspirational tone from your response, but it’s also a subtle way to communicate the fact that you’re interviewing for other positions and actively conducting market research on the positions you’re applying to.?
This is just one of many brilliant insights Sam shared in this episode.
Beyond outlining other successful responses to questions about salary (as well as the appropriate circumstances to use them), Sam also outlined his five-step strategy for successfully negotiating a counter-offer.?
Check out the episode to learn what these five steps are and more!
