Maximize Your Profits: Unlock New Possibilities by Flipping Your Top to Bottom

Let's play a game.

I've always seen business as a strategy game. There are things to be won and things that can be lost. Sometimes our preparation meets opportunity, and we are lucky. Other times, it is about staying in the game long enough to reap the rewards.

And like any game worth playing, we need the people and players to make it possible to play the game.

Owners and entrepreneurs are some of the most competitive people out there.? Sure some entrepreneurs, they are using their businesses to cover or meet their needs.? Then some are more competitive, and the goal is to win.??

Our clients tend to be the competitive bunch, who are out to win in a good way for them, their clients, their team, and the community.? Altruistic winners, but no less competitive.

Finding the opportunity to play these mini-games in business can be a way to work with that competitive spirit, bringing back the thrill of the game to what can become drudgery.

Ready to play with me??

We are going to play the top-bottom game.

Let's start by grabbing your profit and loss statement from last year and a blank piece of paper. Referencing your profit and loss statement, write your total revenue from last year on the paper.? (This number can also be called total income or total sales).? This is your top-line number.?

Scan the profit and loss statement and look for your net income. Wait to write anything down on your paper just yet.? Bring your awareness to the bottom line.? Depending on the organization and complexity of your statement, this number generally appears right after your total expense.

Look back at your paper.? Stare at that number for a few seconds, and close your eyes. Mentally visualize that number at the bottom line, and that's your new target.??

Here's where the fun stuff starts to happen.??

First of all, take a moment and check in with how you are feeling. What are your immediate thoughts???

  • If they tend to be negative - that's worth digging into; this represents areas where you may be getting in the way of your success and self-sabotaging it.
  • If they tend to be overtly positive, check in with yourself - are you showing up, putting in the effort, and staying consistent enough to produce results?
  • If you are in the middle, are you getting tripped up with needing to know the “how” before you act?? Are you staying comfortable because the unknown is too scary?

Now, let's go back to our paper.? I want you to draw a line above the number you've written down.??

  • What would need to be in place to make this possible?
  • What would need to change to make it possible?
  • Who would you need to become to make it possible?

We've done this several times for our clients, take their topline and make it their bottom line. Then, we like to take it one step further- to take the topline and make it the take-home for our owners.? When a business has growth foundations, we have played this game and seen the transformation in less than a year.? For others, we must build more foundations in the first year and begin playing the game in the second year.

Time is very subjective to each client we work with.? There are so many variables to setting up the game board; our job is to help you see where you've got gaps, help to fill them, guide and strategize with you on the best next step through unfamiliar terrain and ultimately help you win your game in a way that produces predictable profits so you can continue to grow and scale without burnout.
