Maximize Your Network Efficiency with MPO and MPO Breakout Cables
In today’s fast-paced digital world, the demand for faster, more reliable data transmission is at an all-time high. MPO (Multi-Fiber Push-On) and MPO Breakout Cables offer cutting-edge solutions for businesses aiming to keep up with growing data requirements, especially in high-performance environments like data centers, telecom infrastructure, and enterprise networks.
These cables enable high-density interconnections, ensuring smooth data flow between critical points such as data storage facilities, servers, and distribution points. Let’s explore how MPO cables can help future-proof your network and enhance the overall performance of your infrastructure.
What Are MPO Cables?
MPO cables feature a multi-fiber connector that allows multiple optical fibers to be terminated in a single connection. This capability makes them a preferred choice for high-speed data transmission, particularly in applications such as 100G, 200G, and 400G Ethernet, which are essential for modern networking requirements, including 5G deployments.
While MPO and MTP? (Mechanical Transfer Push-On) cables are often used interchangeably, there are key differences. MTP? cables are an enhanced version of MPO, offering higher performance and a removable housing that allows for better mechanical support and easier maintenance.
Applications for MPO Cables
Key Features of Starview's MPO Cables
Type A and Type B are the most common to establish a working link. Type A is chosen based on requirements and/or project.
Nevertheless, Type B (Reversed) is the go to option for 100G SR4, 200G SR8 and 400G SR8 connections. Reversed Fiber-Polarity connection ensures that Transmission (Tx) channels are aligned with Receiver (Rx) channels.

Jacket Colors: MPO cables come in different jacket colors, which denote the type of fiber. For instance, yellow jackets indicate single-mode fibers (SMF), while aqua jackets are for multimode fibers (MMF), making it easy to distinguish between cable types during installation.
MPO Trunk and Breakout Cables
MPO Trunk Cables offer compact, high-density solutions for interconnecting equipment across long distances, making them a popular choice for backbone infrastructure in data centers and enterprise networks. Trunk cables consolidate multiple fibers into a single cable, greatly reducing cable clutter and simplifying the installation process.

Singlemode Fiber (SMF):
MPO Breakout Cables (also known as fanout cables) split a single MPO connection into multiple single-fiber connectors, such as LC or SC. These cables are ideal for environments where devices of different capacities need to be interconnected, for example, 40G Ethernet breaking out into 4x10G or 100G breaking into 4x25G connections. However, not all 40G and 100G transceivers are capable of this conversion as it requires a built-in MPO connector and it comes only in SR4 (Short Range 4 lane) and PSM4 (Parallel Single Mode 4 lane) transceiver versions. More on transceiver types can be read in our 100G QSFP28 transceiver.
