Maximize Your LinkedIn Profile: 3 Steps to Stand Out to Recruiters

It’s always a great idea to invest some time in polishing your LinkedIn profile, especially since many companies use a tool called LinkedIn Recruiter. This tool allows recruiters to search for candidates via keywords, location, industry, and a number of other parameters.
With over 990+ million registered users, it’s no surprise that recruiters rely heavily on this tool.
When I am working with my clients, I always make sure to consider how recruiters use LinkedIn Recruiter—and tailored their profiles to boost their visibility.
To stand out, here are three key areas to focus on: Keywords, Job Titles & Recommendations.
Step 1: Use Keywords
Including relevant keywords and phrases in the About Section is crucial, so your profile appears when recruiters search for potential candidates. The About Section is your chance to highlight your experience. One great way to identify the right keywords? Look at the job descriptions for roles you’re targeting, and the LinkedIn profiles of people already working in similar positions.
For a recent client who was targeting a technical project management role, we added specific keywords like "Agile," "Scrum," and "stakeholder management"—all essential in project management. By strategically using these keywords, his profile began to surface for relevant recruiter searches.
Pro Tip: Keep your keywords in concise blocks of information, making it easy for recruiters to quickly understand your experience.
Step 2: Include All Your Past Job Titles
"I don’t think I need to include my early job," is a statement, I often hear. But here's the thing: LinkedIn is all about connections. The more jobs you list, the more people can connect with you.
Every past job—whether an internship, volunteer work, or a part-time college gig—builds your network and increases opportunities for people to find and reach out to you. So, don’t hesitate to list that early experience! This isn’t a one-page resume, and you never know what kind of connections it might lead to.
Pro Tip: A larger network increases your visibility and the chances of being found by recruiters.
Step 3: Ask for Recommendations
One of the things I always tell my clients, is that you should always be updating your LinkedIn profile. Just like you wouldn’t ignore capturing a great moment for your Instagram, don’t let your work achievements go unnoticed.
The best way to build credibility on LinkedIn is through third-party recommendations. Ask for recommendations from professors, managers, colleagues, or mentors. Having a diverse set of recommendations from different stages of your career makes your profile much more impressive.
Pro Tip: Don’t hesitate to offer recommendations to others as well—build those good vibes and pay it forward!
