Maximize Your Leadership: A Quick Exercise For You

Maximize Your Leadership: A Quick Exercise For You

How do you make others feel?

Whether we are aware of it or not, our presence and how we connect with others always make people feel something. As leaders, we shape the emotional climate around us, and where there are people, culture will evolve—whether by design or by default. The question is: what kind of culture are we fostering?

Leadership goes beyond driving results; it’s about cultivating environments where people feel safe, seen, and supported. By reflecting on the impact we have on others, we can actively work toward creating a positive, inclusive culture that allows both ourselves and those around us to thrive.

This self-exercise is designed to help raise awareness and explore how you, as a leader, can contribute to building better cultures within your teams and organizations.

You are invited to reflect upon and answer the following questions:

1. How do people feel in your presence? What kind of culture do you create around you?

Consider the energy and atmosphere you bring to your team. Do people feel comfortable, energized, or inspired when they interact with you? Or do they feel tense, hesitant, or disconnected? The culture you create begins with how you show up each day. Reflect on whether your presence fosters trust and inclusivity, and consider how you can become more intentional in creating a positive environment.

2. What values and behaviors do you need in the culture around you to be the best version of yourself?

To lead effectively, it’s essential to operate in a culture that aligns with your values and supports your growth. Where in your life do you feel most connected and cared for? What behaviors and values empower you to be your best self? Identifying these can help you shape a culture where both you and your team can thrive.

3. How can you make sure the people around you feel comfortable to take off their identity masks?

Authenticity is the foundation of trust and meaningful relationships. Reflect on how you can create a space where people feel comfortable being themselves without fear of judgment. What can you start doing more—or less of—to encourage openness? When people feel safe to drop their “masks,” they bring their true selves to work, and that’s when genuine collaboration and growth can occur.

4. What real conversations would you be having if you weren’t afraid?

Fear often keeps us from addressing the issues that matter most. Think about the conversations you might be avoiding—whether with colleagues, employees, or even yourself. What discussions would you initiate if fear wasn’t holding you back? Often, the most important conversations are the ones that lead to deeper understanding and stronger relationships.

5. What is one area in your life that needs your attention—an area where you'd like to make a positive change???

We all have areas in our personal or professional lives that could use some healing or improvement. Where in your life could you focus your attention to bring about positive change? Whether it’s in a relationship, a work habit, or self-care, identifying this area is the first step toward growth and transformation.

By taking time to reflect on these questions, you can gain greater clarity on the role you play in shaping culture and fostering a more connected, authentic, and positive environment. Leadership is about more than guiding others—it’s about continuous self-improvement and leading by example. Start by looking inward, and the changes you make there will ripple outward into the culture around you.
