Maximising your resources for optimal outcomes: tuna toastie edition

Hello LinkedIn! Maddie here; still optimistic, still kicking, and still unemployed af.

While I can’t spend my days training and teaching others to maximise the software and tech they use day-to-day in the workplace, I thought I’d #pivot and teach my network how to maximise some basic pantry items for optimal success and satisfaction.

Today, I’m going to take you through how to make a ripper tuna toastie!

A tuna toastie is a common go-to lunch option, and with the flexibility of working from home, we are no longer faced with the judgemental stares of our colleagues who dislike the distinct tuna scent. We can now eat all the tuna we want! Out in the open! Without needing to apologise or sit in the corner alone!

This process uses the basics for a tuna toastie as well as some simple add-ons with the aim of elevating stakeholders' use of common ingredients. This ensures successful adoption of key pantry basics, with a view to drive growth and retention of the products for future success.

First, gather your ingredients:

  • Sirena tuna, Italian style in oil (crucial!!!!). You can use a 95g tin or 185g tin depending on how hungry you are; adapt this to your individual needs.
  • Whole egg mayonnaise (if you’re using traditional or low-fat, this training is not right for you)
  • Seeded mustard
  • A couple slices of fresh tomato
  • Sourdough bread (cut this as thick as your soul needs. Go on, a little thicker...)
  • Pickled jalapenos (can substitute for pickles or some sliced pickled onion. A bit of acidic tang is crucial to the successful execution of this task)
  • Nuttelex or butter
  • Salt and pepper

First, you're going to drain the tuna. Gotta be watching those cals when I'm sitting on my bum watching Netflix all day! Pop that into a bowl when this is completed.

Then, you're going to mush the tuna with some of our supporting players: about a tablespoon of mayo (less if you're using a 95g tin), a teaspoon of mustard, a generous grinding of black pepper and salt to your taste. It's important to remain #agile and adapt this to your individual needs.

The tuna mix; tuna, salt and pepper, seeded mustard and mayonaise.

Next, spread some Nuttelex on the sides of the sourdough that will be in direct contact with your toastie maker. I don't have any dairy intolerances; Nuttelex just has a nutty flavour that hits differently.

Lay a strong foundation of cheese; doubling up on slices and tearing them to fit the parameters of the sourdough is going to result in a superior outcome, so take your time with this step.

This photo depicts cheese that has been torn to fit the shape of the bread. This prevents overhanging and burning of cheese when placed in the toastie maker.

Next, apply a generous amount of tuna mix. I'm talking at least 1cm.

This photo depicts the slices of sourdough layered with cheese and tuna mix. The tuna mix is roughly a centimetre thick.

Sandwich that together (again, ensuring the Nuttelex side is facing out).

Pop this in the toastie maker until the cheese melts. If you don't have a toastie maker, you can put the toastie in a non-stick pan and toast each side on a low-medium heat for a couple of minutes (#agile). Take care when flipping; I'd recommend using at least two spatulas for this complex step.

Once the desired cheese-melt-toasty-outside level has been achieved, open up the toastie and layer on your fresh tomato and jalapenos. Some Cholula Hot Sauce also goes well here if you want to go above and beyond (Cholula sponsor me please).

If you don't like spice, pickles are fine. I used pickles here as I tragically finished off my 1.95kg jar of jalapenos the other day, but luckily I was able to #pivot and use pickles instead (#agile).

If you don't like pickles, use some sliced pickled onions.

If you don't like pickled onions, you're doing it wrong.

Finally, revel in your success by stepping away from your screen and eat this in a relaxing location. Time away from your screen is important for your health and wellbeing, and deeply focusing on a single task (i.e. toastie eating) is an effective time management strategy.

I'm always open to feedback, so if you have some toastie methods or combinations that work well for you, or if you think this process has some shortcomings, you are welcome to slide into my DM's to discuss the improvement of future toasties.

Kind regards,

Maddie Campbell

Thank you for the two spatula tip (also smart by you, covering yourself 'legally' against poor users).
