Maximising your morning : A guide to a productive day off

Now I know we all just want to sleep in on our days off or public holidays, and while I agree that it’s good to have lazy days every now and then, it’s important to have a routine to focus on the things you’ve been putting off because of your busy schedule and prioritising the things you’re passionate about. To be honest, this is a reminder to myself as well to commit and be more consistent in my routine.

Before we get into it, first let me run you through some benefits of having a productive morning routine on your off days. Of course it will vary from person to person and each individual’ goals but this is a general overview I’m sure most will relate to;

  1. Sets a positive tone for the rest of your day - having a set routine and a productive one in the morning will influence your mindset in a positive way, you are tricking your brain into wanting to be efficient from the get go.
  2. Increases energy levels - a quick little workout or going for a walk to get some fresh air followed by a wholesome breakfast can do wonders for your energy levels. I can vouch for this because I end up feeling a lot more focused and energetic after doing so.
  3. Creates consistency and better time management - a routine helps you prioritise your tasks and manage your time effectively and reduce procrastination. This gives you a sense of stability and helps your overall wellbeing.
  4. Builds discipline - daily reflection and goal setting helps you align your days actions and creates positive habits which contribute to personal and professional growth.

Right, now here’s what you can do to have a productive morning routine on a day off;

  • Wake up early but also sleep in every now and then - honestly this isn’t something I do often but the days I do, I feel a lot more productive and fulfilled. It’s okay to sleep in, your body needs rest and time to recoup so that you don’t burn out. ( that’s something I failed to do last year and experienced severe burnout )
  • Start with a positive mindset and a mindful ritual - begin your day with gratitude with the extra time you have, journal things you’re grateful for and this is something I personally enjoy doing, pray a prayer, practise breathing exercises and enjoy the quiet of the morning.
  • Plan your day - whether it's a personal project or leisurely activities or even just catching up on chores, write it down. Let’s be honest it super satisfying to cross/tick off the completed tasks from your to-do list. Again this will help you feel fulfilled regardless of what your tasks are.
  • Healthy breakfast + exercise - there are so many 10 minute workouts/stretching/yoga videos available on YouTube to help you get in movement, and honestly I myself have noticed how energetic I am throughout the day because of a quick workout. Breakfast is your biggest meal, I’m sure you’ve heard of that before. On your days off treat yourself to a special breakfast like pancakes or French toast or even good ol’ eggs bennies, just have more than a cup of coffee.

  • Self care - days off are the days you whip out your face masks, your 3 step skincare routine becomes a 7 step routine ( if it applies to you ). Days off are all about relaxing and rejuvenating, take a nice long bath, enjoy your coffee, go for a walk, read the book you’ve put aside, treat yourself to some good food. Do the things that make you happy, things you wouldn’t usually do because you go to work.
  • Work on your personal projects - make the most of this time by working on yourself, your hobbies, your passions, learning a new skill, finishing that online course. Your future self will thank you for working hard for yourself.
