How often do you find yourself checking and responding to work messages throughout the day? A new study has shed light on the real impact of these digital distractions. According to the report by Economist Impact , these distractions are costing us, on average, a staggering 166 hours of focus time every year.
The study also revealed that communication tools such as Slack and Teams, both owned by Microsoft, LinkedIn's parent company, are the leading culprits in distracting Australian workers. These digital distractions were closely followed by personal activities like social media and shopping, unproductive work emails, and time-consuming work meetings.
Here are some key findings from the report:
- Digital distractions, like messaging apps, cost Australian workers 166 hours annually.
- Personal activities, including social media and online shopping, result in 146 hours lost per year.
- Unproductive work emails are responsible for an 82-hour drain on focus time.
- Work meetings, often deemed unproductive, cost 75 hours annually.

The collective annual cost of these disruptions to Australian businesses is estimated to be a substantial $27,585 per employee, accounting for 29% of average baseline salaries.
The study highlights that there are practical steps organizations can take to help their employees regain their focus time. Remote work tools and the provision of quiet workspaces are strategies that have proven effective. Additionally, employees should be encouraged to block out focused work time in their calendars and create meeting-free periods to enhance productivity.
In a recent LinkedIn post, recruiter Paul Zauch offered his perspective on this issue. He emphasized that many work-related chats might not be business-critical when it comes to completing tasks but are essential for fostering a thriving organizational culture. He suggested a return to a more traditional approach - picking up the phone for a conversation when needed.
