#Mauritania’s Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC)’s selection in December 2022 as a threshold program recipient sends a positive signal to investors. The US$ 20 million funding package demonstrates Washington’s trust in Mauritania to reform policies that limit economic growth. Investors, particularly those interested in infrastructure, energy, and agriculture, should pay attention to this West African country as it adopts policies that encourage investment.
Mauritania’s threshold program comes at the right time. The country is looking to attract investment and develop critical sectors of its economy. The MCC threshold program puts the country on the right track to do so. As investors look at Mauritania, they should understand how specific reforms will enable them to deploy capital wisely and efficiently. Investors should also understand the progress of non-economic reforms, especially those related to civil liberties.
An MCC delegation of diplomats and technical officers will arrive in Mauritania in late February. The diplomatic team will meet with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani and ministers while technical officers study data and financial records. Following the meeting, Mauritania will launch its reform efforts. In the long term, the country hopes to secure an MCC compact that lasts five years and can reach US$ 500 million in funding. #14nontheground #insightfordecisions
