Our producer tells a very personal story about what happened when she came out

June marks Pride month. If you’ve been listening to the show for awhile, you know this is a particularly important month for my family. I’m gay. In fact, I come from a very queer family, and two years ago, I wrote a book about growing up in this family. It’s called The Family Outing , and you can still find it in most bookstores.

We feature many queers guests throughout the year as part of our line-up of important voices with career expertise. But this time of year, it’s important to me to share stories specifically about coming out.

See, when we speak up about our own experiences, we make the world around us a little safer for other people who are closeted or struggling to come out of the closet. This feels particularly important in contemporary times.

So this year, the Hello Monday team is sharing an episode that our producer, Lolia Briggs wrote and recorded last fall. It’s not an exaggeration to say this is among our most powerful episodes to date. I want to extend a big thanks to Lolia for sharing her story. Here she is:

We're off this week for Juneteenth. June 19 marks the day in 1865 that enslaved people in Galveston, Texas?found out they had been freed?— after the end of the Civil war, and two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. We invite you to spend some time on Wednesday in rest and remembrance.

I came out at work in defense of someone else that posted public message in support of Pride to which another employee too offense claiming it was a political statement and had no place at work. I still think HR dropped the ball on that one, and still is fumbling the pride ball in their DEI commitments. At least this year when another employee put out a post celebrating pride, there was nobody piping up to object.
