The NO MATTER WHAT Attitude

Recently in a Pregame workshop with government leaders, I introduced taking a "No Matter What" attitude as an accountability tool.?

No procrastination. No moving deadlines. No excuses.?

Minds = blown. Everyone was excited to practice it. I think it was the renewed sense of empowerment: even in bureaucracy, there are ways forward.

Starting out in theater, it never occurred to me not to have a No Matter What attitude. Opening night is a non-negotiable moment; the curtain goes up and the audience is present. You better be ready.?

Back in 2004, I wrote and produced a play called Marathon: A Comedy in 26.2 Scenes, based on training for my first marathon. Now there's a double No Matter What: a show premiere and a starting line. Process is done; it's time to perform.

Yet, as my career moved into working with creative professionals... then startups... then nonprofits... then government, I quickly learned that shifting deadlines was the norm.?

Not on my watch! "No Matter What" is a major indicator of integrity to your clients, community, and team.

There is always something else you can do to get things done.?

They didn't answer your email? Pick up the phone.?

Your presentation isn't ready by 5pm? Get back on it after dinner.

Didn't hit your revenue goal? Improve your process, work your funnel, generate more leads, hire help.

I'm not saying that I always achieve my goals on time, but I am saying that I 1) set goals that are largely within my control to achieve, and 2) start by identifying?my part - what I could have done better - when I don't hit my goal on time.?

It's easier to blame the client, the economy, the colleague, the election. But integrity means leveraging the no matter what attitude to do everything you can to make your goal happen, and training your team to rise to the same level.?

Curtains up, players. Performance time.?
