Dreams are worth it. That’s the message actor and filmmaker Matt Drago shared when he joined me for an episode of The Inspired Choice podcast. Our conversation was a deep dive into his journey—from martial arts to acting, from Hollywood to independent filmmaking, and from auditioning to creating his own production company.
Matt, known for his role as Fabian Verdugo in Somewhere in Montana, is not just an actor but a storyteller at heart. His passion for filmmaking, combined with his martial arts background, has shaped a career built on resilience, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to his craft.
The Parallels Between Martial Arts and Acting
For Matt, martial arts isn’t just a skill—it’s a philosophy that has influenced his entire approach to acting. “My dad is my sensei,” he shared, explaining how growing up in a dojo taught him discipline, humility, and the importance of learning from mentors.
“Like martial arts, acting is a self-practice. It’s about finding your own process. Being open to mentors, learning from those who’ve been doing it longer, and constantly refining your craft.”
His martial arts background gave him the ability to be adaptable—something that translates directly to his work as an actor and filmmaker. It’s about control, not just of the body but of emotions and storytelling.
Becoming Fabian Verdugo: The Role That Left a Mark
Matt's latest role in Somewhere in Montana was more than just another job—it became a personal journey. Playing Fabian, a passionate and sometimes stubborn film director, mirrored his own experiences in the industry.
“Fabian is a big character. He’s passionate about his dreams and goals, and he doesn’t apologize for it. But at the same time, he deeply cares about his cast and crew. That’s something I relate to.”
By taking a method acting approach, Matt immersed himself in the role. He even shadowed the film’s real director, Brandon Smith, to better understand the mindset of a filmmaker. The result? A performance that resonated deeply with him and, hopefully, with audiences.
Creating Stories Instead of Waiting for Opportunities
Many actors wait for the phone to ring, hoping for their next big break. But Matt and his wife—a writer and former actress—decided to take control of their creative future.
“We wanted to stop waiting for opportunities and start creating them,” he explained. Together, they founded their own production company, focusing on telling powerful, meaningful stories. Their next goal? Producing their first feature film.
It’s a bold move, but one that aligns with Matt’s philosophy:
? "If you have a story to tell, don’t wait for permission. Find your people. Build your team. Create your own opportunities."
The Power of Inspiration and Mentorship
Matt credits much of his growth to mentors like acting coach Terry Schreiber, who pushed him to take the leap from New York to Los Angeles. Having strong mentors, he says, is crucial in any industry.
His advice? Stay inspired. Surround yourself with people who lift you up. Keep pushing forward, even when the journey gets tough.
"Giving up on your dreams is giving up on a part of yourself. Stay inspired, be around people who inspire you, and enjoy life—because we only get so much time on this planet."
What’s Next for Matt Drago?
As Matt continues auditioning for roles, his biggest focus remains on collaborating with like-minded creatives and bringing stories to life through his production company. He’s also working to expand the reach of Somewhere in Montana, which had its limited theatrical release in January 2025 and is set for streaming later this year.
