Matium Minute Vol. 6 - June 10th, 2024
Matium at the Recycle Colorado Summit
The Matium team had an exciting and productive time at the Recycle Colorado Summit! We connected with industry leaders, shared insights, and discussed the future of recycling and sustainability. One of the highlights was our presentation on the digital transformation of supply chain infrastructure. If you missed it, you can catch our speech on YouTube and check out more details about our trip on LinkedIn.
Economic Indicators Update
Last week, key U.S. economic indicators showed steady employment growth and rising consumer spending. The unemployment rate decreased slightly, reflecting continued job market recovery. Consumer spending, a major driver of economic growth, saw an uptick, suggesting increased confidence among consumers. These trends are particularly positive for the recycling, manufacturing, and raw materials industries. Higher employment and consumer spending typically lead to greater demand for products, including those made from recycled materials, thus driving growth and expansion opportunities within these sectors. We will also be watching closely on Wednesday during the June FOMC Decision to hear the ongoing conversation around rates.
Industry News: EPR Developments
In recent news, New York’s proposed Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) bill was struck down. The bill failed due to strong opposition from industry groups and concerns over the exclusion of chemical recycling. The bill sought to mandate producer responsibility for packaging waste, aiming to increase recycling rates and reduce environmental impact. Industry opponents argued that the bill’s aggressive timelines and lack of chemical recycling options would impose economic burdens on businesses and consumers. The bill’s defeat highlights the complexities and challenges in enacting comprehensive EPR policies?.
The Matium team will be at the Maryland Recycling Network and Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Mid Atlantic Conference today! If you are here, let's connect!
