Mathematical Optimization and winning Oscar Prizes...
The 2020 Oscar prize gives me the opportunity to recall a well known property of constrained optimization: given an optimization problem with constraints, assume that we relax (eliminate) some of the constraints. If the globally optimal solution of the relaxed problem satisfies also the relaxed constraint, then it will be optimal for the constrained problem too.
Concerning this movie: if we relax the requirement that the Best Foreign Language Award goes to a non English language movie, and it happens that the resulting Best overall Picture is not in English, then, as a consequence, it will win the best foreign language file prize too!
