Last week, OpenAI released its new AI model, ChatGPT o1, also known as Strawberry. It is available in two versions (preview and mini) for Plus or Team subscribers, for now. This improved model is expected to perform better in math, delivering more accurate results as it has the capability to “think” and fact-check itself. This made me wonder why such a powerful Generative Artificial Intelligence tool was initially weak in math, which inspired this week’s edition of #EverydAI…
As we continue building trust in our GenAI tools and relying on them a little more each day, it is important to have a basic understanding of how they process information and come up with the answers they provide. I’ll try to simplify it for you. Let’s dig into it!
ChatGPT does not do math the traditional way, like a calculator or Excel spreadsheet. Instead, it generates math results the same way LLMs (Large Language Models) come up with all their answers: by making predictions. ChatGPT has been trained on vast amounts of information from the internet and other public sources. Based on this training, it predicts the “most probable next word” in every type of task it receives prompts for, such as grammar, world knowledge, sentiment analysis, translation, and even math problems.
The approach of predicting the next word or token in a sequence based on learned patterns works wonderfully for text-based tasks. However, when it comes to math, this method can lead to incorrect results in complex calculations. Hence, the need for improvement in the new o1 version.

OpenAI is planning to release version o1-mini to all free users sometime in the future. I’ve tested it, and it takes a few more seconds to provide answers compared to GPT-4o. While I find it fascinating that high precision math results can be generated through predictions, I won’t be using GenAI tools for math anytime soon. I have a better tool for that called “The Calculator”, which gives me 100% accuracy!?? #BetterAI for a #BetterWorld VxM AI

6 个月It's fascinating how OpenAI continues to refine ChatGPT's capabilities, especially in math. I mean, the shift from statistical prediction to a semblance of "thinking" is a huge leap. This raises the question: How does Strawberry's fact-checking mechanism differentiate between factual claims and plausible but incorrect inferences?
