Me holding a Make Shift Rocket Engine

Math and Rockets

I am raising money for my classroom. The details are here.

Enclosed are pictures of our last launch on January 19, 2024 in Lantana.

A student photographer recorded this picture just like we had photographers at test sites at YPG (Yuma Proving Grounds.)

We took a small engine and super glued a straw portion.? So it had some stability issues but still mostly straight flight.

We used one of 4 1/4 A3-3T Model Rocket Engines. We are using these Estes mini rockets engines because our recovery area is small.

3rd period is my best period. I have 6 periods. I intended to launch rockets with them on the 26th but I had issues with my test launch with my son on January 21st in Hobe Sound.

The launch vehicle on the launch pad.

We had launch issues on the Lantana launch on January 19. After 4 attempts, we got one successful launch. Where as when I was with my son in Hobe Sound on January 21, we couldn't get one successful launch after 5 attempts.

Troubleshooting is a part of the engineering process.

We burnt through a number of starters just to test the reliability of the system.? The stuff is manufactured in a place that is recently known for quality.

A close up of a burnt starter.

Another problem I have is the launch pad.? During the January 21st Hobe Sound launch with my son, the guide rod broke.

The flimsy aluminum guide rod bends and bows.

Michael D (student) test log follows:

Time on site 10:53 January 19

Launch operator Anna M (student)

Conditions overcast

launch time 10:56 test 1 malfunction

As the launch director, I am communicating with the 2 test recorders. I was training a student to take over my job.

[suspected] cause faulty fuse

light test successful

test 2 10:59 failed

Here you can see the rocket engine with the super glued straw, the starter and stopper.

[suspected] cause faulty fuse and blocker

We think disarming rocket to find the problem found switch out blocker and and starter. Starter test

11:03 rearming rocket

11:07 launch successful

recovered it

Smelled bad launched commenced at 11:09

The 2 student test recorders (not photographed) record events with a time stamp. I communicate what I am doing with the class and the recorders.

questions [and comments]

1:emma said it was a waste of time

2:why did it go in a spiral?

3:how far did it go up?

4:how hot was it when it was launched how hot it was when it landed?

5:and did the overcast cause it to act differently what if it was a sunny day out what would have been different?

6:some student said that cause it was raining it may of caused it to fail

if was windey would it of caused it it to go back or forward or would it make the propulsion more?

The launcher re-armed and ready for flight.
Finally! A successful launch!!!
The rocket soared about 40 feet high and landed 20 feet away - near my car.
