Mastermind Group: Differentiating Yourself from the Herd

Every week I'm out there looking for unique brokers and industry professionals with stories that inspire us to be better at what we do. Rudy Garcia is a great example.

In 2012 he left his 17 year career at Kaiser to establish his own independent agency. In 2016 he joined a Mastermind Group and learned to separate himself from the herd.

Masterminds aren’t common in the health insurance industry so it wouldn’t be a surprise if you haven’t come across one, but they’ve been around for a while.

Benjamin Franklin did it. Napoleon Hill wrote about it.

According to Hill, “No two minds ever come together without a third, invisible force, which may be likened to a ‘third mind.’”

Yeah, what he said.

Technicalities aside, Rudy Garcia was a savvy businessman to join a group of 30 other agents across the country for networking and the sharing of best practices.

He has a new website, a new online scheduling system and an expanded team to support his agency.

He also made the cover of Risk & Business Magazine, has been invited as a speaker to the Benefits Forum & Expo in Boca Raton and is about to be a published author with the release of Breaking Through the Status Quo, a collaboration of 22 business consultants.

Rudy’s not gun shy about trying something different. He was the first agent to use the CalChoice Online Enrollment System and an early adopter of the broker-friendly PEO option so there’s no surprise that he took a lesser known approach to self-improvement.

Whether his latest idea is on the cutting edge or in the fringe, it’s refreshing to have been in the industry so long and to still run into such a unique perspective.

Frankly, I see the brokers that are winning are the ones that come at it from a different approach. We all know the spreadsheet game is pretty tired, our success at CalChoice is evidence of that much.
