In today’s relentlessly busy world, success isn't just about having the right mindset; it’s about mastering your energy levels. Energy is what sustains your drive, fuels your productivity, and determines whether you can operate at your best—consistently. But have you ever noticed that some environments, tasks, or interactions drain you more than others? That’s because energy isn’t one-size-fits-all. Understanding your energy type—whether you’re an Extrovert, Introvert, or Ambivert—are just some of the key factors to mastering your energy, leading authentically and preventing burnout,
From an Energy Leadership perspective, mastering your energy means going beyond surface-level mindset work to truly understanding how you process stress, when you need to recharge, to perform at your best. The reality is, that pretending to be something you’re not or forcing yourself into energy-draining situations to fit in can lead to underperformance, exhaustion, and ultimately burnout if left unchecked.
Understanding Your Energy Type
1. Extroverts: Energised by External Stimuli
Extroverts are often perceived as outgoing, enthusiastic, and action-oriented. They thrive in dynamic environments, gaining energy from social interactions, collaboration, and active engagement with the world around them. Extroverts process information externally—they tend to “talk things out” and prefer immediate feedback.
2. Introverts: Energised by Reflection and Solitude
Introverts recharge through quiet time, reflection, and solo activities. They tend to process information internally, thinking through problems deeply before responding. In communication, they may be more thoughtful and deliberate, preferring written communication or time to process before speaking.
3. Ambiverts: The In-Between
Ambiverts fall somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. They can adapt to both social and solitary environments, depending on the situation. Ambiverts have a unique ability to balance introverted and extroverted tendencies, making them flexible team members.
The Dangers of Pretending to Be Something You're Not
Many of us, at some point in our careers, have felt the need to conform to an energy type that doesn’t match our natural inclinations. Whether it’s an introvert trying to act extroverted in a high-energy project team or an extrovert forced into hours of quiet, focused work, pretending to be something you’re not is unsustainable. It can lead to chronic stress and a lost sense of self. Over time, this disconnect between who you are and how you operate drains your energy reserves and leaves you feeling out of alignment.
Sustaining and managing your energy levels is the key to performing at your best more often than not. It’s about creating an environment where your natural tendencies are respected, and your strengths are amplified. The best leaders know that encouraging team members to be authentic and work in alignment with their energy type creates more productive, engaged, and resilient teams.
Thriving in a Team with Mixed Energy Types
Working in a team with mixed energy types can be incredibly rewarding if managed correctly. However, when individuals don’t understand or respect the different energy needs of their colleagues, it can lead to misunderstandings, frustration, and decreased productivity.
The key to thriving in a mixed-energy team is understanding that each person processes information, communicates, and recharges in different ways. By creating an environment where people feel comfortable operating in alignment with their energy type, you’ll foster more genuine collaboration, creativity, and sustained high performance.

Holistic Awareness: Body, Mind, and Energy
Mastering your energy isn't just about mental focus—it involves whole-body awareness. From emotional regulation to physical resilience, knowing what your body needs to function well is crucial. This includes:
Holistic self-care practices, including mindfulness, proper nutrition, regular exercise, and adequate rest, help ensure that your energy levels are sustainable over the long term.
Managing a Team of Mixed Energy Types as a Leader
As a leader, understanding your team’s energy types is crucial for effective management. The best leaders recognize that productivity isn’t about pushing everyone into the same mold but about helping each individual work in a way that aligns with their natural energy patterns.
By embracing your team's unique energy types, you create a more cohesive, energized, and high-performing team. Leadership in today’s world is less about pushing people to fit into a specific box and more about helping them thrive authentically. Recognizing and honoring the diverse energy types within your team is the first step to fostering long-term success.
The Power of the Energy Leadership Index (ELI) Assessment
If you’re ready to dive deeper into mastering your energy, the Energy Leadership Index (ELI) Assessment is a transformative tool that offers profound insights into how you show up in life and at work. Unlike personality tests that categorise you into fixed traits, the ELI is an attitudinal assessment that examines your energy levels across various situations, from calm environments to high-stress scenarios.
The ELI Assessment goes beyond simply identifying whether you're an introvert, extrovert, or ambivert. It uncovers the underlying thoughts, emotions, and perceptions that drive your energy levels, helping you understand what elevates, disrupts, drains, and defines you. This insight allows you to pinpoint the exact moments where your energy shifts—whether positively or negatively—and gives you the tools to regain control.
What Makes the ELI Different?
The Energy Leadership Index Assessment doesn’t just measure where you are; it helps you forge a clear path for where you want to go. After completing the assessment, you’ll participate in a debrief session where a certified master practitioner helps interpret your results. This session provides powerful clarity, revealing key areas where you can "turn up" certain aspects of your life and work for more authentic action, and areas where you can "turn down" energy drains that are no longer serving you.
The ELI provides a mirror to help you see where you are energetically at any given moment and offers a roadmap for how to elevate your energy to higher, more productive levels. It’s a powerful tool for leaders and individuals alike, providing both deep self-awareness and practical steps to take authentic action toward a more aligned, balanced, and empowered way of living and working.
Incorporating the Energy Leadership Index (ELI) Assessment into your journey of mastering energy is far more than just self-reflection—it’s a transformative tool for long-term success. It provides the deep clarity necessary to make meaningful, sustainable shifts in how you approach your career, relationships, and overall wellbeing. By identifying what drives and drains your energy, you’ll learn to direct it in ways that truly align with your values and goals.
