Life is getting crazy and a healthy work-life balance is becoming a unicorn. Many misconceptions surround what work-life balance truly is. Let's debunk some common myths and realities, revisit the benefits and damages of work-life balance, help you reflect on where you are at with it, how to set priorities, and explore five key rules to master work-life balance.
Myth vs. Reality:
Myth: Work-life balance means spending an equal amount of time on work and personal life. Reality: Work-life balance is about prioritizing tasks and allocating time based on individual needs and values. It's not about splitting time evenly but rather finding a balance that works for you.
Myth: Work-life balance is only achievable for those with flexible schedules or fewer work hours. Reality: Work-life balance is attainable for everyone, regardless of job type or schedule. It's about effective time management and boundary setting, not just the number of hours worked.
Benefits of Balance:
A balanced work and personal life leads to improved overall well-being, increased job satisfaction, and enhanced productivity. For example, when I make time to cook dinner for my son or walk my dog to the park, I feel happier and more fulfilled, which positively impacts my energy and performance at work. Imbalance can result in burnout, strained relationships, decreased performance, and negative impacts on physical and mental health. I remember vividly during the early days of my career in Argentina when I worked 14-hour days, even on weekends. This relentless schedule left me exhausted and stressed, resulting in decreased productivity and dissatisfaction with my work.
Self-Reflection Exercise and Priority Setting:
Take a moment to reflect on your current work-life balance. How do you feel about the amount of time you spend on work versus personal activities? Are there areas where you feel overwhelmed or neglected? Consider what aspects of your life bring you the most joy and fulfillment and what stress and unhappiness. Identify your core values and goals, and align your priorities accordingly. Determine what matters most to you in both your professional and personal life, and allocate time and energy accordingly. For example, if spending time with your children is a top priority, make sure to schedule family activities and set boundaries around work commitments. In my experience, it is critical to set a fixed time to finish work, and even have a 30-minute notification for a last boost to finish up the loose ends. Visualize what you will do after leaving the office. You will need to cope with the obsolete face time syndrome and constantly educate peers and managers on the philosopy of working smarter, not harder. Good luck with that.
