Mastering Virtual Interviews
Management Sciences for Health
MSH advances knowledge and technology globally to support people locally to achieve health for all.
In this new job-search era shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual interviews have become the norm, with platforms like Zoom and Teams taking center stage. Just as you would meticulously prepare for an in-person interview, mastering the virtual realm requires careful consideration if you are to leave a lasting impression on your interviewer. Follow these tips offered by our Talent Acquisition Team to navigate virtual interviews with confidence.
1. Test Your Tech
Download the Zoom or Teams app in advance and ensure your device, audio, and video settings are in working order. Conduct a quick test to confirm that your microphone, speakers, and camera are functioning correctly.
2. Stabilize Your Connection
Check and stabilize your internet connection; consider using an ethernet cable directly to your router or modem for a more reliable connection.
3. Noise Control
Find a quiet, well-lit space for your virtual meeting, minimizing dark shadows and creating a professional setting. Wear a headset to minimize ambient noise, providing clear communication during the interview.
4. Set the Stage
Optimize your background by using app features to blur or select a professional preset. And be sure to have a backup plan—be ready to switch to your phone in case of unforeseen technology issues.
5. Punctuality Matters
Log into the meeting early on the interview day for a final tech check and to address any last-minute issues.
6. Minimize Distractions
Close all unnecessary apps, tabs, and notifications to ensure you can maintain optimal focus during the interview. Mute your phone as well. This both prevents unwanted interruptions and allows for a smoother, more professional conversation.
7. Dress the Part
Dress professionally as you would for an in-person interview—a polished appearance sets a positive tone.
8. Lighting Matters
Invest time optimizing lighting to ensure you are well-lit during the interview. Natural light facing you is ideal, but if that's not possible, position a soft light source in front of you to avoid harsh shadows.
9. Eye Contact Etiquette
During the interview, maintain eye contact by positioning your viewpoint directly at the camera. Set your webcam just above eye level for an optimal visual presence. Check out this article from Career Narratives for additional tips.

10. Body Language Awareness
Pay attention to your body language. Sit up straight, maintain good posture, and use hand gestures appropriately to convey engagement and enthusiasm.
11. Practice
Conduct a mock virtual interview with a friend or family member to get comfortable with the technology and receive constructive feedback on your presentation and communication skills.
12. A Few Final Thoughts
In addition to mastering the technical aspects of virtual interviews, it's crucial to invest time in understanding the company's values and goals.
