Mastering the Virtual Interview: Lighting, Backgrounds, and the Subtle Art of Coffee Sipping

Virtual interviews and meetings are now the norm in the business world. Despite what we’ve all learned in the past few years, virtual settings continue to introduce unique challenges—and opportunities. The right preparation can help you make a strong impression, helping you stand out from the crowd. From lighting to backgrounds to the etiquette of sipping your morning coffee, here are some simple yet effective tips to help you shine in your next virtual interview.
1. Lighting is Everything Your face should be well-lit, but that doesn't mean you need fancy equipment. Natural light is your best friend! Position yourself facing a window to ensure even lighting, which makes you look more engaged and professional. A simple desk lamp or ring light behind your webcam can work wonders if natural light isn't an option. Avoid backlighting, as it can cast shadows and make it harder for the interviewer to see your face. We call this the “halo” effect– no, it does not make anyone look heavenly!?
2. Create a Calm, Professional Background Choose a setting that’s clean and neutral. A well-placed plant adds a natural touch, creating warmth without being overwhelming. Lisa Groover has a preferred setup with a warm white background and well-cared-for fiddle leaf fig in the corner. Tasteful art can be a great conversation starter as well! Just be sure to avoid anything overly distracting or too personal. We recommend our clients avoid displaying religious symbolism, political messages, and/or swimsuit photos in the background!
3. The Etiquette of Coffee (or Tea) Sipping Try to avoid consuming anything during your interview. That said, we occasionally have to slip in a caffeine break between our daily responsibilities and job hunting. If you are going to sip coffee or tea, do it sparingly and between questions, never mid-sentence. A quiet mug or cup is a better choice than anything with a loud lid or straw, and remember to mute yourself when taking a sip. Also, ensure your mug conveys the message you want it to! Good: Plain and simple mug without logos or messaging. Bad: “Rise and Shine Mother Cluckers” chicken-themed coffee mug (we're happy to share that story another time!).?
