Mastering the Top 3 Ultrasound Controls for Better Imaging

Mastering the Top 3 Ultrasound Controls for Better Imaging

Do you want to improve your ultrasound images but aren’t sure where to begin? Whether you’re new to scanning or revisiting your machine after some time away, the sheer number of buttons and settings can feel overwhelming. It’s easy to hesitate and doubt whether you’ll ever get the hang of it.

The good news is that, regardless of experience, adjusting just three key settings can make an immediate difference in your scanning results.

1. Frequency: Enhance Clarity and Detail

Your frequency setting plays a crucial role in defining image quality. The right frequency depends on the size of the animal you’re scanning.

For smaller animals, use a higher frequency to achieve sharper, more detailed images. For larger animals, a lower frequency allows ultrasound waves to penetrate deeper. For example, when scanning a golden retriever’s abdomen, a lower frequency is required to reach deep structures, whereas a cat or spaniel requires a higher frequency for clearer definition. By considering the size of your subject beforehand, you can set your frequency accordingly and achieve optimal image quality.

2. Gain: Adjust Image Brightness

Think of the Gain control like adjusting the brightness on a screen—it helps balance contrast for better visibility. Ideally, bones and gas should appear white, fluid should be black, and other tissues should display as varying shades of grey.

A common issue among beginners is images that look too bright or washed out. Many assume there’s a fault with the machine, but in most cases, adjusting the Gain to darken the image will fix the problem. Experiment with this control, and you’ll quickly notice how much clearer your scans become.

3. Depth: Optimise Your View

The Depth control determines how much of the scanned area appears on your screen, similar to zooming in and out on a camera.

Use this setting to focus on specific structures, such as a single gestation sac, or zoom out for a broader view to better orient yourself in the abdomen. Since Depth will need frequent adjustments throughout a scan, familiarising yourself with its location and function early on will make your scanning experience much smoother.

These key controls are available on all ultrasound machines, including those at PUM. However, the most important factor in improving your skills is?practice. You don’t need a pregnant animal to build confidence—simply scanning a cooperative animal and experimenting with these settings will help you understand anatomical landmarks and enhance your technique.
