Mastering Remote Leadership

Note from Yann: ?? Hey there, I’m Yann A?tBachir ! Each week, I share practical tips to help you level up your career.

This week, I'm diving into the recent push for 5-day RTO mandates by some big companies. In my opinion, it's a step backward. A result of poor remote leadership and ignoring the proven benefits of remote work.

I'll also share actionable strategies for adapting your leadership style to succeed in a remote environment.

?? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

Have you seen the latest 5-day RTO push from Amazon , Grab , and others?

Are we really going backward on everything we learned about remote work?

It was like they suddenly forgot everything we learned about remote work !

It seems like they're ignoring all about the 9% productivity gains from remote work.

Sure, some people might have taken advantage of the flexibility, but punishing everyone with long commutes seems a bit extreme, don't you think?

It's like adding a 15% tax on everyone's time just because a few folks weren't as responsive as they should have been.

My opinion is those abusive folks might just be a symptom of bad remote leadership.

If companies are struggling with remote work, it may not be because remote work doesn’t work—but because leading remotely requires new skills.

Leading a remote team is a whole different ball game than simply letting people work from home.

I've been managing remote teams since way before COVID. I had to lead teams spread over several countries and timezones in APAC.

So, I've had some time to figure out what works and what doesn't. Let me share some of the challenges I've bumped into and how I've tackled them:

The Challenges

  1. Communication: Let's be honest, misunderstandings are way more common when you're not face-to-face. You can't just swing by someone's desk to clear things up.
  2. Trust: Building trust takes more effort when you're not in the same room. You need to find creative ways to show your team you trust them (and that they can trust you!).
  3. Accountability: It's trickier to keep everyone accountable when you can't physically see what they're up to.
  4. Isolation: Working remotely can sometimes feel like living on a deserted island. It's easy to feel disconnected from the team.
  5. Work-life balance: When your home is your office, it can be tough to draw the line between work and personal life.

How to Address them?

?? Over-Communicate!

Regular team meetings and one-on-ones are key.

But don't stop there!

Encourage casual chats on Slack, quick emails, or even impromptu video calls.

It's all about building that sense of connection, even when you're miles apart.

?? Transparency is Key

Be upfront about your goals and keep the communication flowing.

Share your vision for the team and celebrate progress together.

This builds trust and a sense of ownership.

?? Focus on Outcomes

Micromanaging is a recipe for disaster, especially with a remote team.

Set clear expectations and then give your team the freedom to do their thing.

They'll be more engaged and motivated that way.

?? Build Relationships

Don't let those virtual happy hours gather dust!

Make time for social interaction and team-building activities, even if they're online.

Encourage those water-cooler conversations and help your team connect on a personal level.

?? Promote Work-Life Balance

Encourage your team to set boundaries and actually unplug after work.

Lead by example and take breaks yourself!

No one wants to burn out.

?? Tech Up!

There are tons of tools out there to help you manage a remote team.

Project management software, video conferencing, instant messaging... you name it!

Find what works for your team and use it to your advantage.

Remote leadership might require a different playbook, but it can be just as effective (if not more so!) than traditional leadership.?

I’ve experienced it more than 12 years myself by tackling these challenges head-on, you can build a thriving team that collaborates seamlessly from anywhere in the world.

What challenges have you faced with remote work?

I'd love to hear your thoughts and solutions in the comments below.

Let's keep the conversation going and help each other become better remote leaders!

Forcing a return to the office overlooks the real advantages of remote work and the need for effective remote leadership.
