Mastering Product Updates for Aspiring Product Managers

Mastering Product Updates for Aspiring Product Managers

?? Last week’s discussion on product updates was enlightening, with diverse insights that highlighted the complexity of this topic. Today, I’m delving deeper to share my perspective on effectively managing and communicating product updates.

?? Understanding Product Updates

Product updates are changes we make to enhance our product’s value and user experience. They can introduce new features, improve existing ones, or fix issues, all aimed at driving growth and showing users that we’re actively improving and responding to their needs.

Types of Product Updates:

  • New features
  • Feature enhancements/upgrades
  • Product redesign
  • UI/experience redesign
  • Deprecation/retirement of features
  • Security updates
  • Bug fixes (depending on impact)

??? The Three Pillars of Product Updates:

Target Audience: It’s crucial to communicate updates to the right users. In B2B, for example, not every product user needs to know about every feature update. Recommendation 1: Prioritize notifying users who are directly involved with or have shown interest in the feature. Recommendation 2: Admins should be informed about updates with broad product impact

Communication Channels: Select the most appropriate channels based on the update’s significance and user engagement preferences.

  • Blog updates
  • Documentation
  • Events and PR Videos
  • In-product notifications
  • Newsletters
  • Webinars
  • Release notes
  • Customer education content.

Note of Caution: Avoid disrupting user tasks with updates, unless it’s a critical security issue. Also, be mindful of the frequency of updates to avoid overwhelming users.

User Engagement: The ultimate goal is to get users to act on the update, whether it’s trying out a new feature or adapting to a new workflow. Reinforce the update message and make it easy to act on like trying out a new feature Use videos or GIFs to clearly convey the update’s benefits. Nudge users at the right moment to maximize engagement

The key to successful product updates lies not only in the content but also in ensuring that users understand and embrace the changes. As product managers, our role is to guide them through this journey with clear, relevant, and timely information.
