Networking is an indispensable skill for our professional success, and if you want to thrive in this era, it is vital to be capable of constructing meaningful connections. Everyone's record is adjusted based on every comment, post, and reaction they place on LinkedIn. ??
I've always been interested in how to increase my presence in this environment, and I crafted a list of key habits that generate impact on LinkedIn, which was initially thought to be useful for recruiters, but I bet everyone can learn something valuable:
There are plenty of opportunities offered by LinkedIn, a broad range of career growth occasions, and multiple connection-building events. But all these benefits are requesting a high level of understanding of the existing pitfalls to avoid: ??
1?? Inaccurate profiles
A poor profile can obstruct your networking efforts. Pay attention to consistency in writing messages, clear descriptions, and relevant activities that describe your experience best. ???♀?
In my career as a recruiter, I've seen multiple profiles with no photo or a low-quality one, I read boring "About" sections and not-so-authentic descriptions, and in many cases, recruiters are choosing the most captivating and compelling resumes among multiple applicants.
2?? Exaggerated self-promotion
While it is very important to display your accomplishments and knowledge, having a balance and avoiding excessive self-promotion is essential. Constantly bombarding your network with sales pitches or self-promotion posts can distance potential connections. ??
Prioritize offering valuable content that educates or informs your audience. ??
3?? An inconsistent presence
I strongly recommend avoiding long periods of inactivity. Post valuable content regularly and engage your network in various discussions. Participate in debates fostering long-term professional relationships. I was always focusing on building meaningful connections and offering support when needed. ??
Invest time in promoting yourself as an expert, and showcase your skills. Keep in mind that LinkedIn is mainly a professional networking platform, and posting controversial content is not indicated.
4???Disturbing content or hateful materials
Of course, I am still speaking about a social media platform open for multiple preferences and types of personality, and I strongly recommend you not post content that can be considered offensive. Sharing any type of shocking content, such as images or videos, is, however, forbidden by the community guidelines as well.
LinkedIn is not a place to attack others, and as a professional, you should never allow flaming, trolling, or provoking other users. ??♀?
5?? Ignoring the professional etiquette
You have a simple aspect to remember - maintain polite behavior in all your interactions. Avoid engaging in conflicts or controversial debates that can damage your professional reputation. Use respect as the main currency and respond to all messages and comments with good manners. ????
Also, sending direct messages to strangers for favors should be avoided. I want to mention that LinkedIn is certainly not a dating website, and romance is not welcomed in the message area.???

6?? LinkedIn as a social media platform
Posting unessential information, such as intimate details or personal information, that will not interest your employers, future colleagues, or potential customers could be even counterproductive. I've always admired interventions that prove your knowledge, positioning you as an expert in the industry. ??
As I had this problem at the beginning of my experience, I am paying special attention to not having spelling or grammar errors. Great content needs to have a beautiful form too. ??
7?? Missing opportunities
A common error is not participating actively in relevant discussions or failing to offer meaningful contributions to your network. ??????
Joining relevant industry groups and engaging in conversations will boost your connections and potential professional opportunities.?
8?? Building transactional relationships
Don't interact with someone's posts only to get something in return, such as a referral, job, or free consultation. It is the most irritating thing! Oh, I do not want to forget mentioning about stalking someone's every LinkedIn interaction to get their attention. For sure you'll not receive it! ??
Showcasing your expertise and achievements is important, but finding a balance and avoiding excessive self-promotion is essential. I advise you to offer valuable content that educates or informs the audience and avoids bombarding your network with self-centered messages. ??
9?? Not being credible
For every professional with notable experience, the level of trustworthiness will increase if the quality is appreciated and the skills recommended. As an IT recruiter, I would confidently say that not having recommendations from peer specialists or coworkers might cause a lack of credibility in the market. In general, audiences need pieces of evidence to validate or rely on other experts' perspectives. ?????????
?? Being unreachable
As I am someone who spent most of my professional experience in the Talent Acquisition area, during which I had the incredible opportunity to interact with already hundreds of skilled IT professionals or freelancers, I have always valued efficiency. ??
Therefore, having the contact details at hand is recommended. It is effortless to find the up-to-date contact details in the "About" section, so the recruiters (or even myself) will be able to give you a call for a new job opportunity soon. ?
The takeaway
One thing that we can agree upon is that things are changing very fast in this century! Avoiding pitfalls on LinkedIn is an essential item in the starter pack for any professional. ??
We can invest in creating meaningful connections and a positive impact with our digital presence on LinkedIn, and the cost will be the accuracy of the content, attention paid to professional etiquette, and the authenticity of our profiles. ?
Thank you all for your support, kind words of appreciation, and encouragement you've sent me. It's a blast! ?? I am eager to read your messages, and if you feel there is room for improvement in any of the above points, we can start working together on making the most out of your digital journey. ??
