What’s it like to work with a recruiting agency? Three common misconceptions.

As a contingent recruiting firm, we meet many clients and candidates who haven’t worked with an agency before. We wanted to cover some of these common myths and why these are myths. Let’s get into it! ?

Myth 1: Recruiting agencies take on less desirable jobs, or work with less desirable candidates.

Many clients choose to work with recruiting agencies because we have alternative ways to find candidates. For example - we use tools that may not make sense for a small startup to invest in if they’re not making hundreds of hires.

Clients also partner with recruiting agencies if they don’t have a full-time recruiting team or the bandwidth to take on every open requisition. Agencies can be a great option for companies who need help filling in these gaps.

And on the candidate side, recruiters often have early access to roles, and they can help you get a seamless introduction to a hiring manager. Working with recruiters is a powerful tool for the jobseeker who wants to expedite their search.

Myth 2: Recruiters only care about making a hire quickly and not if it’s the right fit.

While it's true that contingent recruiters are motivated by making a placement, agencies prioritize building long-term relationships with their clients and candidates. This means understanding their clients' hiring needs and culture, and providing personalized service to ensure the best possible fit for the employer.

On the candidate side, this means placing candidates in roles that match what they’re looking for, align with their salary expectations, and leave them excited to start their new job.

Prioritizing the right fit over making a quick hire is critical. If a candidate leaves a company because they weren’t the right fit soon after starting, it’s likely that everyone (including the recruiter) will be unhappy.

Myth 3: It takes longer to fill a job or find a new job when working with a recruiter.

Recruiters often expedite the hiring process. We are pros at helping to schedule interviews, answer questions, or aid in negotiations.

In fact: half of our hires go from first interview to signed offer in 21.5 days. This is less than half the industry standard of 49 days for engineering jobs, according to LinkedIn .

Startup hiring tips during each stage of the process ??

We talk about hiring and interview tips often, but some of the basics when hiring for a startup?

  • Spend time outlining your values and the work styles that work best for your team. When you know what you’re looking for, it’s a lot easier to find the best hires for you and eliminate others.
  • Over-communicate when possible and go in with a structure in mind! Top candidates appreciate knowing when they can expect decisions and next steps.
  • Put together some onboarding processes. It doesn’t have to be perfect and it can be fluid, but set your employees up for success from day 1 by letting them know what’s expected.
