Mastering Mindset for Recruitment Success ︱ Confessions of a Recruiter #112

In this edition of Confessions of a Recruiter, we’re thrilled to feature Dimpy Mehta , Director at Exclusive Talent .

With a wealth of experience partnering with sales and marketing executives, Dimpy has built a reputation for securing the best talent for growing teams. Her journey is filled with key insights on mindset, consistency, and client relationships, all crucial to succeeding in the competitive recruitment landscape.

"Mindset was a big part. Recognising that you are your own enemy, not someone else or not people around you."

Dimpy highlights the importance of overcoming self-doubt and taking responsibility for one’s mindset. She acknowledges that entering a new environment brings challenges but reminds us that often, the biggest hurdle is the mental battle within.

Dimpy’s perspective on mindset is transformative. In a competitive industry like recruitment, it’s easy to get caught up in external pressures and comparisons with others. However, Dimpy stresses that the true challenge lies within. She believes that it’s crucial to recognise when we’re allowing our insecurities to take the driver's seat. Overcoming this allows us to make better decisions, push through challenges, and ultimately succeed in our careers.

"My product was my candidate, and that was always the case. So why am I so insecure about myself? Yes, definitely, they're working with me, but my products are my candidate."

In Dimpy's experience, focusing on the candidate – rather than just selling a service – is a game-changer. She believes that building strong, trusting relationships with clients stems from understanding the true value of the candidates she presents. By investing in her candidates and confidently presenting them to clients, Dimpy shifts the conversation away from selling and more toward providing a solution to the client’s needs. This approach not only builds trust but also creates lasting partnerships.

Dimpy’s career journey has been defined by a continual process of self-reflection and improvement. Early on, she realised that mindset was key to success. When she started, the industry felt overwhelming, and self-doubt crept in. But she learned to recognise that her insecurities were her own, not something dictated by the external environment. Overcoming this allowed her to build a solid foundation for her career.

Her experience in managing a large portfolio of clients, often filling 8 to 9 jobs a week, taught her the power of consistency. Dimpy was clear from the start: "I’m not going to do admin because if I’m doing admin, then you’re not using me properly." Her focus on strategic activities and working efficiently led to significant results in a short period of time.

Dimpy also stresses the importance of a strong client briefing process. She doesn’t believe in taking a brief over the phone, as this often leads to miscommunication and unmet expectations. Her approach is to book face-to-face meetings, where she can better understand the client's true needs, which in turn allows her to present more suitable candidates.

Dimpy's advice for recruiters is clear: stay consistent and believe in your product. Don’t be afraid to push back when clients question your process, and always prioritise quality over speed. The recruitment landscape is evolving, and staying ahead requires a balance of expertise, persistence, and a willingness to continuously learn.
