Mastering LinkedIn for Recruiters: Curate, Create, and Conquer

LinkedIn is a goldmine for recruiters. Job seekers are on here looking actively or passively for their next role. If you're an agency recruiter, hiring managers are posting jobs on here and trying to figure out how to leverage LinkedIn for hiring and reduce job board spend.

However, when I talk to recruiters about how they leverage LinkedIn, there's a lot of mental roadblocks people seem to have.

"What do I post about?"

"I don't like what I see on LinkedIn. It's bland"

"I don't want to spam people with automation."

The excuses go on and on.

The real question should be

1 "Is LinkedIn automation and content effective for other recruiters?"

After working with 100s of them and building my own agency, I can say 1000%. YES. It works

2. "Where do I go to learn more" (I have a bunch of free content plus paid courses and trainings on this. Check out digitalrecruiter.io)

3. How do I stay focused on what I need to do, and block out the noise.

Question 3 is what we'll cover in this post. First up,

Curate Your LinkedIn Feed

One of the biggest roadblocks for recruiters on LinkedIn is a cluttered and annoying feed. If you find yourself frustrated by irrelevant or bothersome posts, take control of your LinkedIn experience.

  1. Unfollow the Noise: If someone posts something that annoys you or clogs up your feed with irrelevant content, unfollow them immediately. There's no need to tolerate noise that doesn’t add value to your professional life. As soon as anyone annoys me and posts something stupid or comments, I just unfollow them. I don’t care. I have no tolerance for that type of noise.
  2. Seek Out Quality Content: Follow people and companies that provide valuable insights and information relevant to your industry. This will ensure your feed is filled with useful content that enhances your professional growth.

Overcoming Negativity

If you’re hesitant to post because of a negative experience on LinkedIn, it’s time to change that mindset. Here’s how:

  1. Recognize Your Value: Understand that your ideal market cares about solving their recruiting problems. They are looking for someone who can provide solutions, and that someone can be you. Be that person that shows them you know how to solve those problems, and that they should entertain you in a conversation.
  2. Stay Ahead of the Competition: If you’re not actively engaging and posting, other recruiters will fill that void. They will stand out and attract the clients and candidates you want to work with, even if they have less experience or ability. Recruiters that probably have less experience than you and maybe even less ability are going to beat you because they have better marketing. You don't have to spend hours on this, but track 5-15 people in your market on a Google sheet, and check in 10-15 minutes daily or at least 3x a week.

Leveraging Your Experience Digitally

Success in traditional recruiting methods is valuable but leveraging that experience digitally can skyrocket your results. Here’s how to transition effectively:

  1. Swallow the Pride and Ego: Accept that digital marketing is essential in today’s recruiting landscape. Leverage your old-school success and adapt it to digital platforms. If you’ve had success doing it the old school way, leverage it digitally, and you’ll skyrocket past everyone on here. 1 post can reach 1000 people. You can write that in 10 minutes. How many hours would it take to make 1000 intentional cold calls?
  2. Create Relevant Content: Post content that addresses the specific problems and challenges faced by your target audience. This positions you as an expert and keeps you top of mind. Share insights, wins, best practices, overcoming losses, etc. Call out hiring managers that have too long of interview process, or low ball offers. Educate candidates on best practices on working with a recruiter, negotiation strategies, fixing their resume and overall just helping them stand out.
  3. Be consistent: This is the part most people forget and where they fail. Instead of trying to go viral once, imagine getting 2 posts a week out for a year. That's 100 posts on your feed, that are evergreen, and relevant to your target market. That's likely going to generate 100,000+ impressions from at least 10,000 unique profiles. Some of those could turn into leads within days or weeks, some are months, but your future self will thank you either way.

Curate your feed, post relevant content, and win.

Recapping Practical Steps to Dominate LinkedIn

  1. Clean Your Feed: Regularly unfollow or mute accounts that don’t add value. Focus on building a feed that inspires and educates you.
  2. Engage Consistently: Make a habit of posting regularly. Share insights, success stories, industry news, and tips that your audience will find valuable. Action Step: Plan and schedule your posts weekly to ensure consistency. LinkedIn has this feature (the little clock symbol when you go to create a post).
  3. Interact with Your Network: Engage with comments on your posts, participate in discussions, and reach out to connections. This builds relationships and increases your visibility. Action Step: Set aside 10-15 minutes daily to respond to comments and engage with your network.
  4. Showcase Your Expertise: Use your posts to demonstrate your knowledge and experience. Highlight how you’ve solved problems for clients and candidates in the past. Action Step: Share case studies or testimonials that showcase your success stories.

Conclusion: Curate, Create, and Conquer

There’s no excuse not to dominate LinkedIn. By curating your feed, overcoming negative mindsets, leveraging your traditional success digitally, and consistently creating relevant content, you can stand out and achieve remarkable results. Remember, the opportunity to excel as a recruiter in 2024 is immense, but you must take proactive steps to seize it.

There’s no better time to start than now.
