Mastering Leadership Concepts: Emotional Intelligence
As a veteran who transitioned from military service to civilian life, I was initially unaware of the concept of emotional intelligence (EI). My focus during the transition was finding employment, adjusting to civilian routines, and supporting my family through the changes. It wasn't until I encountered challenges in communicating and connecting with my new colleagues and peers that I stumbled upon the importance of emotional intelligence. Surprisingly, I discovered that EI is a powerful tool that could have made my transition smoother and more successful.
I have learned that emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand, manage, and influence our emotions and those of others. This skill set, which includes self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills, is crucial in personal and professional settings. Reflecting on my military experience, I realized that our training and experiences as service members provide a unique foundation to develop and enhance our EI.
This article will explore emotional intelligence, how military experiences can be leveraged to develop it, and practical methods to enhance EI. I hope to share these insights with my fellow military-affiliated students, veterans, and their families at Austin Peay State University (APSU) so they can benefit from understanding and mastering this valuable skill.
What is Emotional Intelligence?
