Master Impactful Speaking for Career Growth

Many people worry about their ability to speak with impact – especially if they want to impress the senior managers in the audience who promote employees to leadership roles.

It's true that other skills also rank high on the lists of higher-ups looking for leadership talent: problem-solving and having the ability to work in teams are two of them.

But speaking with impact is valued at the highest levels of an organization for the simple reason it consistently plays such a huge role in the achievement of profit goals or the non-profit mission.?

For instance, impactful speaking helps the organization ...

  • Meet customer needs
  • Save time
  • Cut costs
  • Increase productivity
  • Resolve conflicts
  • Nurture collaboration
  • Attract talent

Here are four signs you’ve got the impactful speaking skills you need to get in the conversation for a promotion:

1?? You have a delivery that gets attention immediately, arouses the listener emotionally and inspires them to follow your call to action.

2?? You know how to design your message to get across what you most want the prospect/client/public to know about you and your business.

3?? You know how to tell stories that motivate people to take a greater interest in what you and your business do.

4?? You know how to speak without preparation so you can field media questions or start conversations that might lead to dealmaking or landing a new client.?

I've got a deep understanding of how to field media questions, as a long-time journalist.

If you have all four of these qualities, congratulations. You’re leadership material.???

If you were lacking in any area, do this to upgrade your skills:

  • Devote yourself to improvement. Practice delivering talks in front of audiences as much as possible. Record your talk and be critical about what you need to do to improve in tone, presence, body movements, engagement, impact.
  • Don't ask family or friends for advice. They love you so much, they will lie to you to spare you from an honest critique if they think it will hurt your feelings.
  • Consider hiring a coach. The coach's job is to help you improve. You'll get faster results by working with a coach than by trying to do it yourself through reading free speaking tips on YouTube.
  • Learn to avoid exaggerating your expectation of how badly a speaking attempt will turn out before you try it. Feel free to mess up in practice. You learn by experimenting.

  • Study the methodologies and frameworks of professional performers.?Even if you’ve never thought of a speech as a “performance,” speaking in front of an audience in a meeting, delivering a talk at a conference and presenting in a webinar are performances that call for stagecraft and a performer's mindset to arouse the crowd emotionally. Watch how the best speakers play to the crowd and learn from them.
  • Learn more about creating an impact on your audience from an expert author. Whether the setting is a team training session, a talk at an industry conference or delivery of a project update, you'll get insight into handling it by educating yourself. My book, "How to Become a Super Speaker: The 7 Principles for Speaking with Confidence and Connecting with Audiences," is a reader-friendly guide that gives you what you need to show up as the best version of yourself on any speaking stage.
  • Incorporate life lessons into talks and presentations. My talks and coaching are informed by the ups and downs of my experiences as an award-winning speaker, public speaking lecturer at Rutgers University; writer or guest speaker for major media outlets including The Wall Street Journal, Time, Knight Ridder Financial, Bloomberg Radio and the Global Television Network; and coaching or creating coaching plans for employees of Nike, Raytheon, Moody's, the New York Stock Exchange and other top US companies. Use your hard-earned worldly wisdom to supercharge your talks and ideas.

Let me help you develop an in-person and online speaking style that will accelerate your rise to the next level. When I work with you, I focus on helping you use your natural ability to increase your confidence, credibility and power. DM me for a quick chat and let's get started.

That will cause them to get confused, to get bored, to get fatigued, or to get lost.
